WHO ready with antivirals to combat swine flu

GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday that it was prepared with rapid containment measures including antivirals if needed to combat the swine flu outbreaks in Mexico and the United States.

The Geneva-based agency has been stockpiling doses of Roche Holding's Tamiflu, known generically as oseltamivir, a pill that can both treat flu and prevent infection.

The new virus, not previously detected in pigs or humans, has proved sensitive to the drug, the WHO said in a statement.

The WHO and its regional office in Washington, D.C., are also sending experts to Mexico to help health authorities with disease surveillance, laboratory diagnosis and clinical management of cases.

Mexican health officials have reported more than 850 cases of pneumonia in the capital, Mexico City, including 59 who died. In San Luis Potosi, in central Mexico, 24 cases including 3 deaths have been detected.

They have also informed the WHO about a third suspected outbreak of swine flu in Mexicali, near the U.S. border, with four suspect cases and no deaths so far.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control have said there were 8 cases of swine influenza in California and Texas and no deaths.

Health authorities in the two North American countries have the resources required already in place, including Tamiflu, and are "well equipped," according to the WHO.

"WHO is prepared with rapid containment measures should it be necessary to be deployed," WHO spokeswoman Aphaluck Bhatiasevi told Reuters.

Influenza-Like Illness in the United States and Mexico

24 April 2009 -- The United States Government has reported seven confirmed human cases of Swine Influenza A/H1N1 in the USA (five in California and two in Texas) and nine suspect cases. All seven confirmed cases had mild Influenza-Like Illness (ILI), with only one requiring brief hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.

The Government of Mexico has reported three separate events. In the Federal District of Mexico, surveillance began picking up cases of ILI starting 18 March. The number of cases has risen steadily through April and as of 23 April there are now more than 854 cases of pneumonia from the capital. Of those, 59 have died. In San Luis Potosi, in central Mexico, 24 cases of ILI, with three deaths, have been reported. And from Mexicali, near the border with the United States, four cases of ILI, with no deaths, have been reported.

Of the Mexican cases, 18 have been laboratory confirmed in Canada as Swine Influenza A/H1N1, while 12 of those are genetically identical to the Swine Influenza A/H1N1 viruses from California.

The majority of these cases have occurred in otherwise healthy young adults. Influenza normally affects the very young and the very old, but these age groups have not been heavily affected in Mexico.

Because there are human cases associated with an animal influenza virus, and because of the geographical spread of multiple community outbreaks, plus the somewhat unusual age groups affected, these events are of high concern.

The Swine Influenza A/H1N1 viruses characterized in this outbreak have not been previously detected in pigs or humans. The viruses so far characterized have been sensitive to oseltamivir, but resistant to both amantadine and rimantadine.

The World Health Organization has been in constant contact with the health authorities in the United States, Mexico and Canada in order to better understand the risk which these ILI events pose. WHO (and PAHO) is sending missions of experts to Mexico to work with health authorities there. It is helping its Member States to increase field epidemiology activities, laboratory diagnosis and clinical management. Moreover, WHO's partners in the Global Alert and Response Network have been alerted and are ready to assist as requested by the Member States.

WHO acknowledges the United States and Mexico for their proactive reporting and their collaboration with WHO and will continue to work with Member States to further characterize the outbreak.

I know of 535 swine in Washington that need a 10 ga. needle right in the ass, if the vaccine would get rid of them.

Health officials have diagnosed a unique type of swine flu in two California children, but it’s unclear whether many people will be susceptible to the infection. The two children were diagnosed last week. One was a 10-year-old boy in San Diego County, and the other a 9-year-old girl in neighboring Imperial County. Both recovered. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention alerted doctors Tuesday, but said there’s no reason for the public to take unusual measures. The virus is resistant to two common antiviral medications, and health officials think the seasonal flu vaccine may not protect against it.)

Pandemic Flu Planning Checklist for Individuals and Families )

You can prepare for an influenza pandemic now. You should know both the magnitude of what can happen during a pandemic outbreak and what actions you can take to help lessen the impact of an influenza pandemic on you and your family. This checklist will help you gather the information and resources you may need in case of a flu pandemic.

  1. To plan for a pandemic:
    • Store a two week supply of water and food. During a pandemic, if you cannot get to a store, or if stores are out of supplies, it will be important for you to have extra supplies on hand. This can be useful in other types of emergencies, such as power outages and disasters.
    • Periodically check your regular prescription drugs to ensure a continuous supply in your home.
    • Have any nonprescription drugs and other health supplies on hand, including pain relievers, stomach remedies, cough and cold medicines, fluids with electrolytes, and vitamins.
    • Talk with family members and loved ones about how they would be cared for if they got sick, or what will be needed to care for them in your home.
    • Volunteer with local groups to prepare and assist with emergency response.
    • Get involved in your community as it works to prepare for an influenza pandemic.

  2. To limit the spread of germs and prevent infection:
    • Teach your children to wash hands frequently with soap and water, and model the correct behavior.
    • Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissues, and be sure to model that behavior.
    • Teach your children to stay away from others as much as possible if they are sick. Stay home from work and school if sick.

  3. Items to have on hand for an extended stay at home:

    Examples of food and non-perishables

Examples of medical, health, and emergency supplies

    • Ready-to-eat canned meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, beans, and soups
    • Prescribed medical supplies such as glucose and blood-pressure monitoring equipment
    • Protein or fruit bars
    • Soap and water, or alcohol-based (60-95%) hand wash
    • Dry cereal or granola
    • Medicines for fever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
    • Peanut butter or nuts
    • Thermometer
    • Dried fruit
    • Anti-diarrheal medication
    • Crackers
    • Vitamins
    • Canned juices
    • Fluids with electrolytes
    • Bottled water
    • Cleansing agent/soap
    • Canned or jarred baby food and formula
    • Flashlight
    • Pet food
    • Batteries
    • Other non-perishable items
    • Portable radio

    • Manual can opener

    • Garbage bags

    • Tissues, toilet paper, disposable diapers

Our DIL is a nurse practitioner in Virginia and hadn’t heard of this until I mentioned it to her 30 minutes ago. She looked it up on WebMD and tried to find the symptoms. Nowhere were the symptoms listed. It seems that if you got a flu shot you’ll have some protection.

She feels that the typical symptoms are that of the flu...fever, aches, cough, etc. Only by testing can it be confirmed.

I just e-mailed my mother (a retired R.N. after 42 years of medical service) to see what her take is on it. She's one of the best, and a straight shooter - her rep precedes her within the local community. If she gives the word, I grab my keister and my horns - in that order - and head for the hills in these matters.

Just thinking to myself...if we are responsible for the guns going into Mexico then they are responsible for the flu right? I demand they stop all germs from crossing the border into the USA!

I think it said they had no intention of closing the border. Too late anyway. Wondering how long it will take to appear clear across the globe with International travel etc.
