Apple today officially announced that customers have downloaded one billion applications from its revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world. The one billionth app, "Bump" created by Bump Technologies, was downloaded by Connor Mulcahey, age 13, of Weston, CT. As the grand prize winner of Apples one billion app countdown contest, Connor will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule and a MacBook Pro.
The revolutionary App Store has been a phenomenal hit with iPhone and iPod touch users around the world, and wed like to thank our customers and developers for helping us achieve the astonishing milestone of one billion apps downloaded, said Philip Schiller, Apples senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in the press release. In nine months, the App Store has completely revolutionized the mobile industry and this is only the beginning.
Today, the groundbreaking App Store has more than 35,000 applications available to consumers in 77 countries, allowing developers to reach tens of millions of iPhone and iPod touch users around the world. This summer the iPhone OS 3.0 software update will provide developers with over 1,000 new developer APIs enabling In-App Purchases, Peer-to-Peer connections, App control of accessories, and Push Notifications. The iPhone OS 3.0 release will also add over 100 customer features including cut, copy and paste; Spotlight search; landscape keyboard and view for all key iPhone apps; MMS support; and expanded parental controls for apps, TV shows, and movies from the App Store.

Apple has begun running a Web ad trumpting the App Store's one billionth downloads in just nine months on websites including CNET, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.
Here is the ad first without sound, then with as seen on NYTimes.com:
10,000 99¢ apps... or 10,000 99¢ songs... decisions, decisions...
The epicenter of New York City pretentious.
Or every movie ever made.
Jealousy is a terrible thing. It may even be a sin.
What has New York City have to do with it? The App Store is in the cloud...
Considering how much AT&T charges for iphone plans his parents are probably going to swipe the gift card to cover expenses.

Yeah, sure - right. We all know that the one billionth app download was actually "Baby Shaker" </mock sarcasm>
Apps work on the iPod Touch, too, unless they utilize iPhone-specific functions like the voice mail and such.
LOL!
You’re sick.
Youre sick.
Not half as sick as the people who wrote "Baby Shaker" . . .
I am getting tired of this AT&T charges too much canard.
Those of us who still have the 1G iPhone are paying $20 per month over our voice phone plans for unlimited data. 3G iPhone users are paying only $30 per month over the voice plan. That is completely competitive with every other wireless company's plans. Voice plans from AT&T for the iPhone start at just $29.95 per month which with a new G3 iPhone would be $59.95 per month.
AT&T's 450 minute voice plan is just $39.95 with a two year commitment. Add the unlimited iPhone data plan at $30 and the combined plan is just $69.95.
Sprint's unlimited email and web access plan for Blackberry is $39.95/month plus a 450 minute voice plan for the same two year commitment AT&T asks which totals $79.95.
T-Mobile's unlimited and web access plan for Blackberry is $$39.99 plus one of their voice plans... which seem to offer more minutes for comparative prices ... they don't offer a 450 minute plan... but their 600 minute plan is $39.99 which makes their combined plan $79.98.
Verizon's unlimited email and web access plan for Blackberry is also $79.95 including a 450 minute voice plan.
So, comparing Apple's and AT&T's iPhone plans to less capable plans from other providers, we find that the iPhone is $10 less expensive per month than the others.
If you don't want to pay for a data plan, fine, but stop claiming that the iPhone is somehow more expensive per month than the others.
Those damn facts!
But passive-aggressiveness is sickening.
