If you’re looking for “Spinal Tap” jokes, you won’t find them here. Sure, that “mock-umentary” did a great job nailing the vacuous hilarity at the heart of bloated ’80s heavy metal, and it made just about every rock documentary that followed in its wake seem like at least a bit of a joke.
Iron Maiden, however, has never fit the accepted mold, nor followed the rules. And with its brilliant new “road movie” “Flight 666,” the band shows no sign of doing so — now or ever.

Well I know Bruce is, as I think he wrote the screenplay for ‘Chemical Wedding’; I would imagine Steve is as well; not sure about Dave, Adrian or Janick. And Nicko has writing credit for just one song, but he’s okay.
I bet Iron Maiden has got more folks to open up a book and enjoy it than 10th grade english class.

The only song pre-bruce that I can think of that fits that category is Rue Morgue, but I only listen to the first album rarely and there may be one there, or one on Killers I have never caught the reference to.

several years ago maiden played the PNC in central jersey and my good friend broke down on the way to the show (we were supposed to meet up during the opening act) and never made it to see maiden that night. a couple months later they were playing the hammerstein in manhattan and my wife couldn’t make it to the show because she had pneumonia so I was able to take him to the show which was his first maiden concert.
my wife is still pissed that I made her stay home with pneumonia, but my friend will forever thank me for calling him first.
That would have been 2003-2004.
I saw them at the Garden in 2003, and the Hammerstein in 2004, the night which some moron dropped his beer on the soundboard.
Whoever went to that show is still bitter about it.
I was at both nights and remember that incident quite well. The same thing happened at a slayer show a few months prior to that at Roseland.
I think a tarp should always be over the soundboard to prevent incidents like that happening.
Never heard of Seventh Wonder, and I’ll be sure to give them a listen, but I couldn’t agree more on Symphony X. What is your opinion of Kamelot?
I just recently began to listen to death metal. I seem to hear a lot of Necrophagist, Origin, and Nile. I seem to enjoy listen to them, any thoughts?
LOL. Funny you should mention Kamelot, I would put them at the top of my list also. Kahn is a great singer, albeit a little different than the normal genre. They are a little more poppy than SX, but still a very tight band. Grillo is a monster on the drums for playing such a small kit. Naturally, I like Dream Theater also but some of their stuff is a little too mechanical for me. I grew up as a fan of the hair bands in the 80’s, so I am still a sucker for melodic metal, etc. Leatherwolf is also a great band from the 80’s with a heavy progressive side.

I met the guitarist from Watain in a heavy metal bar in Brooklyn and it turned out he's from the same town in Sweden as one of my ex-girlfriends that I still meet up with from time to time.
I went out to Sweden and he got me hooked on black metal. So besides the aforementioned older death metal bands, now I like black metal bands (as long as they don't use keyboards) like Watain, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, 1349, Satyricon, and Mayhem.
I would have to say that Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death are still my favorite bands, and they both came out with killer albums this year. Yet if you just got into death metal recently, those may be too extreme.
I recommend the following albums as being brutal yet accessible and not too monotonous to the beginning death metal listener:
Death “Symbolic”
Obituary “Cause of Death”
Bolt Thrower “Those Once Loyal”
Entombed “Clandestine”

That being said, metal thrives on a dark image. But for the most part it is just marketing. I got into metal when I was 13 when a friend played me a tape of a band called Nuclear Assault. I was instantly hooked, and I'm sure it alarmed my mother. The album cover had a horned skull and nuclear cooling towers glowing and (somehow) spewing smoke.
So I cracked open the liner and let her read some of the lyrics. She liked them actually. Songs like “Equal Rights,” “Fight to be Free,” and “Brainwashed.” Here's a sample of Brainwashed:

Watch the news see what they want you to see, our awareness is limited by network VPs
Moronic sitcoms and one-sided news alter your feeling give you conformist views
Why can't you get that garbage out of your head, you'd better off to read a good book instead
That's not too bad of an impression to imprint on kids, no?
This is why I love metal. Some actual good meaning to plenty of songs; along with many songs about history.
Though I’ll say some power metal bands push the envelope a bit far.
