I just recently began to listen to death metal. I seem to hear a lot of Necrophagist, Origin, and Nile. I seem to enjoy listen to them, any thoughts?

Well, musically I'm pretty much stuck in 1994, the year I graduated high school. Wasn't really exposed to too many newer metal bands since then until very recently, and it's mostly been black metal.

I met the guitarist from Watain in a heavy metal bar in Brooklyn and it turned out he's from the same town in Sweden as one of my ex-girlfriends that I still meet up with from time to time.

I went out to Sweden and he got me hooked on black metal. So besides the aforementioned older death metal bands, now I like black metal bands (as long as they don't use keyboards) like Watain, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, 1349, Satyricon, and Mayhem.

I would have to say that Cannibal Corpse and Napalm Death are still my favorite bands, and they both came out with killer albums this year. Yet if you just got into death metal recently, those may be too extreme.

I recommend the following albums as being brutal yet accessible and not too monotonous to the beginning death metal listener:

Death “Symbolic”
Obituary “Cause of Death”
Bolt Thrower “Those Once Loyal”
Entombed “Clandestine”

In the mean time, I guess I'll have to check out the three bands you enjoy. Thanks for the heads up.

Oh, and I highly recommend “Heartwork” by the band Carcass. It's musically very good and easy to get into. You can almost say it's melodic. I happen to like their much more brutal earlier albums, but those require significantly more playtime to penetrate.
