I’m betting it was a koi, which is not a species fishermen generally target. If it is a koi, they aren’t generally catchable with hook and line methods. If it’s not, it’s not likely legal for the guy to keep and raise them.

Smoked carp (called “whitefish” for PR reasons) is a Jewish deli delicacy, and carp is one of the ingredients for gefilte fish.
