Pit bull bite halts K-9; burglary suspect flees

DENHAM SPRINGS — A sheriff’s K-9 bitten by a chained pit bull as the police dog was pursuing a burglary suspect is recovering well, officials with the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

As the K-9, Gunner, latched onto the suspect, a chained pit bull grabbed Gunner by the hind leg, Chief Deputy Jason Ard said.

The suspect escaped, leaving Gunner’s handler and the pit bull’s owner to use force to free Gunner from the pit bull’s jaws, Ard said.

The deputy had to use his baton to force the pit bull to release the police dog, the chief deputy said.

Gunner, a young police dog who has “only been on the street for a few months,” was treated and released from a veterinarian’s clinic and will be “on light duty” for several weeks, Ard said

While the police dog is expected to make a full physical recovery from the puncture wounds left by the pit bull, Ard said, Gunner will have to be put through some additional training as a result of the incident.

“Things like that can hurt a new dog,” he said. The K-9 did what he was trained to do and was attacked, so as a result, the K-9 “can think he was doing something wrong.”

The pit bull has been put in the hands of a veterinarian for observation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

No charges will be filed against the pit bull’s owner because the dog was chained when the incident occurred Friday night, Ard said.

Authorities said they are still seeking the suspect, Vincenzo Macaluso, 18, described as a white male with dark hair. He weighs a little more than 150 pounds and is 5 feet 10 inches tall, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Ard said deputies went to a house on Rose Wood Lane north of Denham Springs seeking Macaluso on warrants for aggravated burglary and resisting arrest, but Macaluso fled when deputies arrived.

Gunner’s handler let the K-9 give chase after the fleeing suspect failed to heed warnings to halt, Ard said.

Unfortunately, the deputy didn’t realize that a pit bull was chained in the area, the chief deputy said.

PB’s owner should be charged with assault of an officer, and obstruction of justice. Maybe aiding and abetting a suspect...

This was not an unprovoked attack by a pit bull. I fail to see where the pit bull or his owner were at fault. The K9 was off leash and invaded the pit bull's territory. For once, it sounds like the pit bull was justified in grabbing the K9.

No where does it say that the dog's owner was connected to the suspect (who I assume ran onto his property) or that the owner told the dog to grab the K9. It's unfortunate that the dog was injured and the suspect escaped, but I can't see where the pit bull or his owner did anything wrong in this case as reported.

Did you forget a sarc tag on that? The dog was chained in its own yard. two strangers invaded its territory. The four legged stranger attacked the two legged stranger. The dog tried to help the two legged. Put all the 4 leggeds on the witness stand and try to sort it out if you want, seems obvious to me.

Sur, did you in fact not fail to know that the animal attacking the human was an officer of the law?

Well did you in fact not know that he was fleeing a crime?

Not the dog in question, just looks like mine.

And you can't get much more peaceful than that, right?

Cheers!

I’m trying to get what ur sayin but need more clarification. A dog chained in the yard IS supposed to guard its location. That is its “sacred” territory.

Since it's chained, it can't just up and leave.
