As an IT Professional, this is a topic of great interest. Many of you are probably home XP users, I think these are some decent suggestions on how to keep getting support for Windows XP, even though support officially ends today from Microsoft.

I suppose this means the end of security updates, etc.?

I just bought a used HP Pavilion with XP on eBay, to replace my old Windows Me machine — restored to original factory configuration and accompanied by original recovery disks. I bought a new laptop with Vista a couple of years ago, and all I can say is “NEVER AGAIN!”. It’s not just Microsoft that’s losing sales over this worthless Vista junk.

Its not the end of the world, yet.

MS will offer security updates until sometime in 2014.

By then, hopefully, Windows 7 will have become a decent OS.

Important security updates, according to MS will be until 2014...but I’m not buying that.

Exactly, how many of you have paid to call Microsoft for support for Windows XP?

This is a non-issue. Do not be alarmed.

As of today, all versions of WinXP are being used on 63% of PC’s and laptops in the world. We shall see if MS stays true to their word.

It won't happen today or tomorrow, but there will come a time when all Microsoft XP extended support will end and when vendors will cease support. In the interim, it may be a good idea to isolate a testing environment with Vista or Windows 7 (when in final release).

Did you sign up here just to post Microsoft bashing threads? We've already got enough Microsoft bashers thank you.

"but I’m not buying that"

For what it's worth I'm pretty sure I still get updates to my VM version of Win2k.

I expect that if for no other than PR they'll have to keep their word. However they did end updates for 98/ME in 2006 as announced (yup, still fire up 98 in a VM from time to time).

Does anyone have a checklist or tune up sheet of things to do regularly on your PC?

I have a mental list that I keep, but that is it.

"Microsoft offers support?"

They offer some very pleasant people in India who read from a script and have no idea (and apparently little motivation) about helping with significant problems, like catching a virus. I will never again waste my time with Microsoft "Support". They only make things worse. I would rather spend money getting The Geek Squad out. They have their flaws, but at least they know how to fix the problems.

> Microsoft offers support?

MS does. The only “support” you’ll get after the system crash is “there...there...”

I'll never buy an HP computer again. They don't believe in end users being able to actally reinstall the OS from scratch. They don't have driver disks available especially for a reinstallation of video codecs for DVD's. I prefer Dells, because I can always start with a bare hard drive. In fact years later, I can install operating systems that never shipped with my system and for which the periferal manufacturers no longer have divers posted online.

Ummm, they said that about Windows NT too.

Then when the next big security issue came out they claimed it wasn't a security issue and refused to offer a patch.

Fortunately at the time, Windows 2000 didn't suck so upgrading wasn't that big of a deal.
