Vanity - Funny Story with my Web Site and Blog

Humor me a minute. I have a disturbing story about my web Site and Blog. I publish a web site with advice for buying a puppy. It contains information about dealing with breeders and avoiding pet stores and puppy mills. It also contains some dog news (remember this for later) and training tips. My Blog has similar articles and is heavily cross linked with my web site.

I recently added Google AdSense to generate a few pennies of revenue here and there. The Blog and Main Site have very similar levels of traffic, but the Blog is the only place earning any ad revenue. The Blog ads are exactly related to the blog content (google looks for words on the page and matches ads to the content). Ads for puppy house breaking, breeders, grooming, etc. all generate interest from people going to a puppy-based blog. The ads google places on my main site on the other hand are strange. Dating Web sites for Blacks, Civil Rights Lawyers, More Civil Rights Lawyers, Minority Grants, Sex Offender Locators, Brinks Home Secority and lots of Child Advocacy Lawyers...Oh, and more Civil Rights Lawyers. No one visiting my site has any interest in these things. Thus, no ad clicks and no revenue.

I went back through my web content, looked for strange words..."family"? "heartache"? "unscrupulous"? Makes no sense...Google researches this stuff, right?

Then it dawned on me....

Puppy News! I had three links to "Obama's new puppy" news articles.

Apparently, Google has figured out that anyone interested in "Obama" is also heavily interested in "Civil Rights Lawyers", "Brinks Home Security" and "Minority Grants"...and apparently, little else.

Well there is a reason why Google is just about the biggest advertiser on the net.
