I had a Golden Retriever that I finally taught to bring in the paper. One Sunday morning I opened the door to find EVERY PAPER IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD on my doorstep with teeth marks all over them. Cost me several bucks to fix that.

Oh my! But far better than having a cat who brings in mice, rats, birds, and the occasional snake — dead or alive.

I had a Schnoodle who would steal the lunches and thermos bottles from the construction workers building the other houses on our circle. The dogcatcher would drive through the neighborhood and open his rider’s door to let Nero ride along to the pound, then call us to go bail him out.

My mother had a cat who would climb up and unlock two latches on the backporch screen door/stormdoor to let the Raccoons onto the porch to steal cat food.

I had a cat that would do that, catch rats and gophers and leave their entrails in the middle of the living room. I wish the idgits I have now would at least catch a mouse.

Your post #13 reminded me of some pelicans I ran into while on vacation years ago over in Pensacola. While fishing off the old bridge there these birds would land a few yards away and nonchalantly wander over to your bait bucket a help themselves to your mullet all in a very calm and dignified way. Most people, me included, were impressed with their good manners just let them have the bait. they would just stand there next to you a swallow their selected mullet then move on to the next bucket, they weren't overly greedy like our current government.

My Grandparents had a long haired tabby named Philip that would knock at the back door when he wanted in. He was a very accomplished hunter. They learned to check through an adjacent window because one time Phillip and had a rather large garter snake in his jaws as he knocked. The snake was not dead yet and was somewhat large. This all took place on Vancouver Island where the climate contributed to fairly size able nonvenomous snakes. Phillip the cat was let in and took his prize into the living room to finish it. My Grandfather tried to take the snake away and the cat objected. A quick swat stunned the cat and allowed my Grandfather to get the snake and throw it out the back door. The cat Phillip was PO’d at my grandfather for stealing his snake. LOL

One of my childhood pets was an Irish setter who would shred our neighbor’s paper while leaving ours unmolested at the end of our driveway. Dad says it was a race to replace theirs with ours before they left for work and found (or didn’t find) the evidence.
