I came across a beautiful version of Unchained Melody earlier today, and it started me down memory lane.

Thanks. Never heard of
The GladiolasLittle Darling
The Diamonds
Written by Maurice Williams, lead singer of The Gladiolas, whose version made the Top 50 on the R&B charts..
Name changed to Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs, and they charted the classic "Stay" at # 1 in 1960. Peaked at # 2 in 1957
The Diamonds' all-time biggest hit, featuring lead singer Dave Somerville (with Bill Reed doing the bass vocal narration).
Technically, this could be considered one of the very first "rap" songs, since it features hip narration over the middle break of the song.
Cover version of the Gladiolas' 1957 Top 50 R&B hit.
This pop version also made the Top 5 on the R&B charts.

I was surprised to hear “Utopia” on Youtube. I thought Frank Gari’s opus from late 1960 was long forgotten. Back in the late ‘60’s, our local oldies station, KWIZ, broadcasting out of Santa Ana, Calif. at 1480 kcs used to play that tune a lot.

I have a copy of the Gladiolas' version of "Little Darling." However, my favorite tune by that group is
"Shoop Shoop," from 1958.

One of the few originals that I don’t like as much as the cover version...
