Strange Food Combinations
leadercall ^ | April 9, 2009 | Robert St. John

I was sitting in the movie theatre eating popcorn and Milk Duds while watching the previews of upcoming attractions when my wife asked how I could combine two seemingly opposite food items. I told her that Milk Duds, when eaten simultaneously with popcorn, are very tasty. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.

While waiting for the feature presentation I began to think of other strange food combinations that I have eaten through the years. Since childhood, I have dipped my potato chips into applesauce. Like Milk Duds and popcorn, the combination of the salt in the chips and sugar in the applesauce play well off of each other. I have always put ketchup on butter beans and now my children have now acquired a taste for their father’s strange legume-meets-tomato-condiment pairing.

I began to wonder what other people might eat in the way of strange food pairings, so I logged on to my Facebook page and posed the question: “What are the strange food combinations that you like to eat?”

We had farmers across the street who would eat that for supper.

When I was a kid my mom would give me sandwiches made of crushed peanuts, cream cheese and green olives - put on white bread.

My mom used to eat chopped black olives with mayonnaise on white bread.

My husband and son are totally grossed out by my 7-up and chocolate ice cream float.

Well, am sure it was filling, stick to the ribs and nutritional at the same time. I know my mother would open the door of the fridge...take a look around and about an hour or so later...call us to the table for what looked like a FEAST but...it was anything and everything she could find and put together to fry, boil, bake or fix however she thought best. That’s what moms did back then. They cooked and utilized leftovers as it got towards payday and funds were low. We NEVER had a bad meal! Well, LIVER maybe but...since the rest of the family loved it it too was good for THEM. Not me but...I STILL had to eat it. Mom said daddy was out there in the elements working hard to put food on the table and we were not allowed to waste it. We had a SMALL piece but...had a piece of it nonetheless. In our house wasted food was a sin. Thank God for my parents.

I feel the same way. My parents were Norwegian immigrants so they ate things like blood pudding, all the organ meats. We didn’t personally eat too much of that and I hated liver and its smell. When I got older, my first husband would fry it with bacon or onions and I actually got to like it. She worked at the university food service for some years and we got lots of good leftovers. Now they won’t let people take food home and they waste sooo much of it.

You are better than me. I never did develop the taste for liver. we would come home from school and the aroma in the house was so wonderful...we would ask if our mother was cooking steak or beef. NO...it is LIVER. Wow, that ruined a perfectly good day. Ha,ha.

If children were made to eat nutritious meals at the table with their families...they would receive so much more healthy benefits like we did years ago. We made dinner out of nothing and enjoyed it. Food was not to be wasted. Can’t imagine how they toss foods out today when there are so many hungry people in the world. It is irresponsible plain and simple and what does it save in the long run???

We have so much more today and yet we have so little.

You are so right. Kids have so much to do school nights sometimes that they grab a slice or two of pizza and soda and out the door they go. Parents work different shifts and they aren’t home for supper at the same time either. It IS sad.

Different flavors of applesauce make great dipping with Doritos nacho cheese. Also, using french fries to dip soft chocolate ice cream is great. And remember the dessert with strawberries that uses crushed pretzels in the crust?

"MMmmmm ... Fritos and anything!"

A friend of mine worked for an exterminator during the summers when we were in high school. He would regularly get calls to the local Frito-Lay plant. He hasn't touched a Frito since.

Just sayin'....

That's a nice combination - sounds yummy. Have you tried vanilla ice cream with root beer?

PB, ham, cheese, Cheetos, and honey on white bread.

Pork rinds and PB

Pork rinds and tuna mixed with cream cheese.

Potato chips dipped in mustard

Vanilla or butter pecan ice cream with pickles.

Dill pickles made into Koolickles - lime and cherry are the best.

Club crackers - spread cream cheese and top with some pepper jelly.

Ham slices, spread with cream cheese and the petite dill or sweet pickles, roll up, chill for about an hour and then slice into rounds. We make both for the holidays.

Corn chips - take about 1/3 bag out - crush the rest. In a pan start to cook some onions, bell peppers, ect in butter. Add the crushed chips, add milk to cover and stir until it starts to thicken. Then add cheese. Can add some green or black olives, ham, pepperoni, bacon pieces, garlic powder ect - just taste before you add any salt. Eat with the rest of the chips. Can also be done with tortilla chips but I prefer the corn chips - sort of like polenta with a bunch of stuff added in.

Yep. The activities should be kept to a minimum. A family meal at the table then homework first and foremost then other things. We need to bring the families back to the dad, mom, kids, supper hour, chores, homework etc...but so many parents working...it is VERY sad.

Yeah, I know food is gross. A friend’s wife opened a bag of Doritos and inside was a big ol’ cockroach. They called the 800 number on the bag, and the company sent them a bunch of coupons for ... yup, Doritos.

Oh sure! We have a root beer stand not far from here and they sell it in gallon milk jugs. Yummy!
