Even the ultimate dog-lovers hate pit bulls
National Post ^

Posted on 04/08/2009 1:05:40 PM PDT by Chet 99

This week, NPR had a story out of Texas about an entrepreneur who's built a massive hangar-sized indoor dog playground, so pet-owners can drink lattes while their canines romp around in air-conditioned comfort. She's even hired four guys to break up dog fights. The story isn't particularly interesting — just another tale of childless yuppies fawning over their animals as if they were baby boys or girls. But I was fascinated by one particular detail: The dog-loving staff who run the place have banned pit bulls.

This is significant because many of the pro-pit-bull types — who complained noisily when Ontario's Dalton McGuinty moved to ban pit bulls way back in 2004 — have argued that ignorant politicians and other assorted non-dog-owners just didn't understand how cute and lovable their pit-bull puppies are, trotting out statistics showing that 4 out of 5 pit bulls don't go ape-crap and tear off people's scalps on the drop of a hat, or whatever.

Well, now we see that bona fide dog lovers — with a capitalist, profit-seeking motive to allow any and all dogs into their facility — have chosen to ban this awful breed. What's the fang lobby going to say to that?

They are wisely responding to their customers demands as any smart business should. That doesn’t mean their customers aren’t ignorant.

Two good friends who are DVMs state plainly that Pit Bulls are no more naturally aggressive than Dachshundts.

The media has a meme and they stick to it. I wonder how often they report on attacks by other dogs... probably ignore those.

So a bunch of NPR listening, soy-latte sipping, doggie purse wearing, limp wristed yuppies don’t like my dog?
Aw, now I’m sad.

The American Straffordshire terrier is one of the most wonderful breeds in the world. Those who “breed” pit bulls take this great animal and abuse it horribly. People who have not encountered the real breed blather aimlessly on about ‘pit bulls’

Pit bulls are far less aggressive than your average terrier, the problem is that they are capable of MUCH more destruction when they do attack. This breed needs to be seriously disciplined and trained with a no nonsense approach that the average dog owner doesn't care to get into. They need to be socialized with other people and pets if you expect to take them around to social places.

I am not against pit bull bans per se, even though I believe the dog gets a bad rap, but the fact is, the average dog owner is too lazy and stupid to have such a dog (or any dominant breed for that matter).

It is all the fault of the MSM.

Did you ever notice that the MSM never reports stories about a lab or a golden retriever that kills or maims a child. Instead, the MSM only reports when a pit bull kills a kid.

Thoose little Dachshundts are plenty agressive in some cases. They just can’t do that much to you.

Ah, liberals. They're not a cute as Pit Bulls. Not as intelligent, either.

Which explains all the Dachshund maulings lately. Aggression without teeth and muscular jaws isn't a threat, so your friends' assessments don't tell us much about the relative danger the breeds present. Many of the owners of these tough dogs should perhaps look into personal male enhancement to fill the need currently met by the dog.

I more hate the average pitbull owner. They are the ones that believe that they have to train their dogs to live up to the reputation they have. I will add to that ... left alone all dogs are animals and that should not be forget. I have two children 14 and 15 and we have had two labs for years. The best blend you can have, but you still have to be cautious

Pit bulls aren’t even in the top 50 most popular breeds but account for about a third of deaths caused by dog attacks. These aren’t all the fault of the owners.

People tend to think of Dachshundts are seimi-comical “Wiener Dogs” and forget that the name
translates to “Badger Hound” they were bred to
flush them out of their burrows. We had one when
I was a kid and it didn't look for trouble, but
would back down from nothing.

Yes, Dachshundts can be trained to be aggressive. They can be trained to go right for your arch!
