Opening Day will have to wait a day.
The Red Sox called off todays opener due to the forecast for heavy rain throughout the day. The game against the Tampa Bay Rays will be played tomorrow at 4:05 p.m., with all of the planned festivities intact. Tickets for todays game will be good for tomorrow and gates will open at 2:05 p.m.
After consulting with our weather service and other professional meteorologists, it became apparent it would be extremely unlikely, if not impossible, that we could get a complete game in today so the decision was made to postpone until Tuesday, team president Larry Lucchino said in a statement. Our fans look forward to this unofficial Red Sox Nation holiday each year, and we want to make sure that they are able to enjoy the full experience including both the special pregame ceremonies and a full nine innings of play.
We reserved an alternate rain date for tomorrow for just such adverse circumstances as present themselves today.
The Sox announced that the later time tomorrow is to accommodate fans who need to reschedule plans.
The second game of the series with the Rays will be at its scheduled day and time -- Wednesday at 7:10 p.m.
Good thing the Tigers are playing in Toronto tonight.
Will Ted K still be throwing out the first pitch, tomorrow? (Not joking, he was set to do so.)

So all you grownups—and kids—who called in sick today to
attend the game...try again tomorrow. (4 pm start though)
One comment on Herald message board for that article:
“Hope the crowd chants “Mary Jo” when the killer throws out the first pitch”
Don’t think so.
This is the first time in years, just about since the new early schedule came into effect, that I recall the Sox opening at home. Opening day used to be mid-April and the Sox opened at home more or less every other year, like normal teams. Early April is too cold for baseball in Boston.
Of course, they have a permanent home date at 11:00 AM on Patriot’s Day (April 20, this year).

Ah—I’d heard about that. Here in Boston area I put away my winter coat but right now (11 am ET) I note it’s 44 degrees here and who knows what with the wind chill so maybe I could still use it. Though we have rain not snow. I always tell people, especially in warmer climes, that I would WELCOME global
warming. Bring it on! Maybe they’d object to having warmer
temps but I’d WELCOME it.
Yes...last year IIRC they were due to play the Patriots Day game at 10 am—vs the L.A. Angels. I smiled, knowing my friend in southern CA could hear baseball at 7 am his time on the radio. But no, there was a rain delay so it wound up starting at noon after all (either last yr or yr before...)
We get snow later than this. Usually the last snow doesn’t come till after Easter. Somewhere around here I have a picture of snow well into May with all the leaves on the trees.
Wikipedia says 2007. Year before last.
The Boston Pops and Seal were also to perform today.
Ah ok!
Good grief, you mean snoozeball season has started already? Gee, I can hardly wait for those mound meetings, the 15 foul balls, the pitcher shaking off 10 signs...all for the eventual pop up to the catcher. Ah, baseball. Right up there with basketball and bowling for sheer excitement.
If you hate baseball that much, why did you bother posting on a baseball thread?
Basketball is exciting the last couple minutes of the game, of course...Well, even I admit that I’ve posted soccer-is-boring comments on a soccer thread so maybe I know how he feels (you know...they play a game with people running up and down the field for hours on end, and if you’re lucky someone may actually score a gooooooooooooooooooal! Goooooooooooooooal!)
