73RD MASTERS TOURNAMENT LIVE THREAD
http://www.masters.com ^ | 4/5/2009 | AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB

Posted on 04/05/2009 6:15:51 PM PDT by cleveland gop

Welcome to the (I guess) official thread to the 73rd playing of the Masters Golf Tournament from the Augusta National Golf Club. Now the game that we love and it's season is now officially, let's see who will be walking the 18th fairway ready to slip the coveted green jacket on late Sunday afternoon.

We all know who's in the field. While I'm posting this thread early, we can discuss and predict who's going to win.

My question is how will the cold weather early in the week affect the practice rounds? I would think this would hurt Master’s rookies more than the vets. So I’d bet on an experienced player winning. The number pick, Tiger. I’m going to throw in retief goosen as my dark horse. He’s had a couple of down years, but is playing better and likes Augusta.

Majors are the championship of something.

The Masters is actually the Championship of Champions. The top 50 players in the world. The winners plus top finishers in the other majors. The winners of PGA tournaments. Plus the top amateurs.

would certainly put the TPC up against the NEGBJI in terms of crowd noise. And there is plenty of public interest and they don't artificially restrict tickets to make them appear harder to get than they should ala the old cranks of the NEGBJI.

LOL......if the Augusta National didn't "artificially restrict tickets", the Masters would be a zoo. How many would you like them to print? One hundred thousand? They'd all go in an instant, trust me. The demand is that intense. The course is packed with the number of tickets which they currently print. It's not to make them appear harder to get.

And I am hardly the only person who thinks the NEGBJI played year in and year out on a course that favors certain types of golfer is a true test. Look up what Lee Trevino about it some time? Of course most golfer will never say anything because the NEGJBI cranks are tend toward fascism and the cranks might find some way to keep them out.

I think we get your real objection to the Masters. You don't like the old boys who run it. Fair enough. They're not not everybody's cup of tea. As for Trevino, did he ever win the Masters? That would be "no". If you're going to spin the line that those who have won a Green Jacket have an incentive to pretend it's a major, I can equally spin the line that those who never could will have something against it.

Sure those who have won the NEGBJI have an incentive to pretend it is a major. That is why majors are not determined by players.

Right......Jack and Arnie and Tiger are just "pretending". They have an "incentive".

Pure codswallop.

“TPC always assembles one of the most elite fields in golf and probably is worthy of being known as the fifth major. But, the MASTERS is a tournament, a feeling, a place and a tradition like no other.”

The Masters is more than just a tournament. It is the defacto world championship of golf.

The Masters (golf)
The Kentucky Derby (horse racing)
The Olympics (track/gymnastics/swimming)
The Tour de France (cycling)

Every sport has their IT event. The one that winning it puts you in a different category. No matter how good you are (how many records you set or events your win), if you don’t win the IT event in your sport you are never considered truly one of the greats.

A golfer could set all kinds of records, win every major event multiple times, but if they NEVER won a Masters they would never be considered one of the true greats of golf.

Plus TPC is played at a tricked-out muni, whereas The Master's has.... Augusta National!

You are right anyone can play the TPC. I did once in thne early 90's. I was the first one off that morning and they had noone to play with me so I played the entire course alone. I put 2 in the water at 17.

I have given up on golf. I can't hit the ball very far anymore and even though he is one of the greatest players, I can't stand Tiger's fist jabbing. It is like he is showing disrespect to the other players.

One of the world's worst golfers here, but if I could play like Tiger, I'd do a little fist-pumping too.

Phil still has it in him to once again handle Augusta.

Oh I like Phil's chances. He's already won it twice and won't have to fight the rough like at an United States Open.

Kelly looks pretty fetching in her Master’s overalls. Wonder what she’s wearing beneath them....

I've given Sergio more chances than my ex-wife! I don't think he has the putter to win Augusta.

Lee Trevino did not have the length to win at Augusta. He once said that if Nicklaus would have had to play his second shot, he would have given up golf.

I would say the US Open or British Open is more difficult to win than the Master’s. With the US Open the USGA sets up the course to be well-nigh impossible and one must have the game for it. With the British, one must periodically have to contend with the horrendous weather. That’s why in the Opens you often get the no-name one-time player (Todd Hamilton? Ben Curtis?) who breaks through - the courses weed out so many others. And both the Opens feature deeper fields than Augusta. To win any of these three championships makes a golfer’s career. To win all three makes a golfer among the all-time greats.

Boom-Boom would have won easily in 1998 if he hadn't double-bogied thirteen on Sunday...... Freddie should have more than one major on his resume.

Good job!!

I forgot that Kelly caddied for Arnie in last year’s par 3 contest.

BTW, W threw out the first pitch just before the start of the INDIANS/RANGERS game in Arlington, TX.

Anyone wanna bet the pitch wasn’t a strike?? I didn’t think so!!!
