73RD MASTERS TOURNAMENT LIVE THREAD
http://www.masters.com ^ | 4/5/2009 | AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB

Posted on 04/05/2009 6:15:51 PM PDT by cleveland gop

Welcome to the (I guess) official thread to the 73rd playing of the Masters Golf Tournament from the Augusta National Golf Club. Now the game that we love and it's season is now officially, let's see who will be walking the 18th fairway ready to slip the coveted green jacket on late Sunday afternoon.

We all know who's in the field. While I'm posting this thread early, we can discuss and predict who's going to win.

Take your opinion somewhere else.

Sorry Mr. Robinson..... oh wait you are just another newbie who thinks they run this site. Well you don't and I will offer my opinion where I want to.

We really don’t care what you think.

You clearly care. You responded to me.

The Masters is a Major, always has been, always will be. Fore!!!

Pretty uniformed aren't you? You must be a boomer who thinks they way life was when they came of age was the way it always was and always must be. The original majors that Bobby Jones won were the Open Championship, the British Amateur, the US Open and the US Amateur. There were majors before there was a masters. So much for "always has been." Hahahahahaha. "Always will be" will be decided in the future. It is not a major to me. It is not a championship of anything and is a tourney one level down like the other tourneys in honor of Arnie, Jack, Hogan and Nelson.

The TPC is redundant... We have the US Open, and the PGA... we don’t NEED another US “Championship”....

You make a good point. I could see an Australian or South American or South Africa or European continent or Asian major in the future. Three majors on US soil is redundant. Of course the first to go is the one that is not a championship of anything. At this point in time, I would guess later the PGA would give way rather than the TPC. What tourney around the world would you suggest for a second major not on US soil?

Yup, if Phil managed to shoot just two-under on the back he would have been in the playoff. Three-under and he would have won outright. Can’t take away from his brilliant 30 on the front but..... HOW THE HELL COULD HE PUT THAT BALL IN THE WATER ON 12?????

Feel bad for Perry, and for Campbell too. They had their chances. You can say Cabrera was lucky, parring 18 after two bad shots, but he took advantage of his luck.

Cleveland, thanks for running the thread! On to Bethpage, where a certain Mr Woods will be, once again, the prohibitive favorite.

There were majors before there was a masters.

The Open, and the US Open were around before there was a Master's, but... the concept of "Majors", as we know it today, has really only been around since about 1960. Arnie more or less kicked it off by telling a reporter he would try to win the Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA as a way of duplicating Bobby Jone's credited "slam of major tournaments".

Actually, the British Open was not considered a "Major" tournament at that time by the US media... since, not many Americans played in it. So, by today's standards, The Master's has been a "Major" just as long as the US Open or British Open.

None of us can predict the future.... The public perception of what the "Majors" are could certainly change. But, for now... The Master's is flying high in popularity both among the public, and professional golfers. YOU may not care about "Tradition", but most people do. And, the golfers certainly do care. They LOVE the idea of competing on the same course upon which Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Sam Sneed, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and many others made golfing history. They LOVE the idea of being able to go back there, every year, to remember their great achievement. They LOVE the idea of winning more than just a tournament, of winning a place in history... to be a part of, "tradition".

It matters... more than the huge prize money of the TPC. A lot more.

For my money, I'd just as soon seen the TPC replace the PGA as the "4th Major".... Or, see the PGA land on a single course, or course rotation. But, I don't see the TPC course as being worthy of such a distinction. Seriously, I've played there... I liked Doral better. And, Spyglass Hill, and Valhalla, and Edgewood (Tahoe), and several others.

For anyone who’s interested HBO is playing a sport documentary called “Legends of the 1960 US Open”. It’s playing right now in CA but it might get replayed. fyi.

I saw that show a couple of months ago...it’s definitely worth watching... at least, for anyone who cares about “tradition”. :-)

Seriously, it's just about impossible to pick a winner in a golf tournemnt - other than taking Tiger every time, in which case you'd be just about breaking even.

Who would have picked Ben Curits or Todd Hamilton to win the British Open - ever?

Steve Jones to win the US Open? Or even Cabrera two years ago? As Cabrera showed yesterday, you need a little bit of luck in these things too.

it really is impossible to pick a winner in especially a major!! Angel as poorly as he started yesterday ended up being most unflappable in the end. Of course, it didn’t hurt to have that ball bounce left off that tree instead of right.
Fact is, he still had to get up and down from the fairway and he did. He had to make that 10 foot putt downhill to extend the playoff, and he did.

Of course it didn’t hurt that KP’S gas tank was on E down the stretch and Chad couldn’t answer the bell.

Now did you ever hear Kenny complain about there being mud on his ball on 10 fairway before he hit the second shot into the trees? Nope....

But Serge did!!! Did you hear him crying about the mud and the course being tricked out? So he issues an apoligy for what he said. Too late Sergio. The New York patrons are waiting to get you at Bethpage. Think Monty took a lot of crap here? Sergio is going to get blasted big time.

I can be sure he has no chance to win, or even make the cut. As for Angel and me not calling my friend who’s in Vegas to put a bet on him to win, well I’ll let his fellow countryman say it.....WHAT A STUPID I AM!!!!!

I honestly think 5 hours of golf wore Kenny out. It’s a shame cause Golf Channel just did an interview(Jim Gray). Kenny’s devestated......

Kenny is my favorite player for about the past nine years. I felt as bad on Sunday as I did the day Reagan died and Smarty Jones lost the Belmont. Still, Kenny is having a great year, and I thought he was going to retire after the Ryder Cup last year.
