Ninety Days to Live, Let's Party!
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 04/03/2009 | Joe Rodriguez

Last Friday the 13th:

Doug Hope was relaxing at his home in Tucson, Arizona, when he received a call from Bob Saunders, a fraternity brother at San Jose State back in the late 1950s.

"Doug, it's Friday the 13th, not a good day,'' Saunders, 68, told his old friend. "I've got only 90 days to live.''

Earlier that day, Saunders was being prepped for surgery at a hospital Ashland, Or., hoping doctors could remove an aggressive tumor in his brain.

Julie Johnson, a classmate of Saunders at Willow Glen High School was driving on the freeway, when she took his call on her cell phone. Surgery would be too risky. He'd either suffer a stroke during the operation or he would die on the table.

"Bob, what can I do?'' Johnson asked.

His answer, "Tell everyone I know.''

Even on the precipice of death, Bob Saunders remained the Willow Glen High graduate and Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity brother who kept in touch more than anyone else.

On Thursday, under a brilliant sun at a grand, old Mission style house in San Jose's east hills, three dozen of Saunders' old friends gathered to say goodbye, reminisce, drink some beer, philosophize about life and death, drink some wine, devour hot dogs and hamburgers, and say good bye once again. It was a frat boy party with one foot in the grave, but a dignified one filled with genuine, brotherly love.

Just Keel Over

The two organizers, Hope and Dave Roberts, expressed Advertisement blended emotions from opposite ends.

"Let's get as many of the guys as we can," said Hope, "and just have a kick-ass party.''

Pretty sad if you ask me.

No mention of God in the story.

The man apparently has ignored God his whole life and even now, while Jesus stands ready to save him, he ignores him.

Glad you were able to come to the conclusion that he’s ignored God all his life based on this 900-word article.

“No mention of God in the story”.

...I noticed the same thing. Maybe he was an old 60’s peace with surrender, America hating, dope smoking, Humphrey, Carter, Pelosi supporting, follow the “Dead”, secular, radical freak?

Or, maybe the “Mercury News decided to leave that “God” part out?

Marry a woman with six kids living in a trailer park. Those 90 days will drag on and last FOREVER.

. . . or spend every remaining waking moment watching Michael Moore documentaries. It would accomplish two things: (1) time would pass interminably slow; and (2) death would be a welcome release.

SoConPubbie said — The man apparently has ignored God his whole life and even now, while Jesus stands ready to save him, he ignores him.

And then you (cdbull23) said — Glad you were able to come to the conclusion that he’s ignored God all his life based on this 900-word article.

Seems just as apparent to me, too... I don’t know why you can’t see that.
