Cutler going to Bears

By John Clayton

ESPN.com

The Chicago Bears pulled the big upset Thursday afternoon by acquiring Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, a source told ESPN.com.

The Broncos confirmed the move.

To acquire Cutler, the Bears had to give up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010, a source said.

To complete the trade, the Broncos had to give back an undisclosed draft choice in a later round.

The Bears beat out the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, Titans and other teams to get land the 25-year-old Pro Bowl quarterback.

The Broncos had been asking for at least two first-round choices.

Cutler asked to be traded when he found out first-year coach Josh McDaniels tried to acquire Matt Cassel in a trade with the Patriots.

Cutler had not returned phone calls from the Broncos, according to the team, and had been staying away from the offseason program.

John Clayton is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com

A fool and their draft picks are soon parted.

Kyle Orton won all those games for the Bears and this is how they do him? I hope the Bears enjoy their 5-11 season for the next several years!

This is depressing. I like the Broncos more than I like the Bears because I lived in Colorado before I lived in Illinois.

At the going price of 2 1st-round picks, I’m glad the Bears paid up and not my Vikes.

Well the Broncos can begin to address their biggest need which is a whole new front seven on defense.

They're my Jets and Fox Sports is reporting the two firsts, this years third and Orton.

I would have liked Cutler, but that is a steep price.

Holy crap that much!!? The worst part about this of course is that ESPN will run to Obama to get his thoughts.

So Cutler got his feewings hurt when he found out the Broncos were trying to acquire another QB and then he refused to play for Denver. So what about these other teams that were trying to get trade their QBs for Cutler? Will the Redskins, Buccaneers, Lions, and Titans QBs now be hurt and demand to be traded?

I’m so tired of analysts stressing Cutler is a ‘pro-bowl QB’ when everyone knows the vote was taken before the end of the season and most objective observers would have chosen Pennington or Cassell over cry-baby Cutler.

That being said, I kind of liked Orton for his grit to get wins despite lack of talent, but the Bears did get a somewhat better QB. But for 2 no #1 picks?

How does that put the Patriots trade of Cassell and Vrabel for the 2nd pick in the 2nd round? Did KC steal the Patriots blind?

Personally, I don’t think so, I think Belichik will trade that high 2nd rd pick for a 1st rd pick in 2010 and eventually get his value and the Pats needed the cap space to pay a younger LB w/ better prospects.

In my personal overall analysis, the Bears overpaid to get an ok starting QB while Denver can have Orton hold the fort and pick Sanchez or Freeman in a more economical position later in the 1st rd and get an additional 1st pick in 2010.

Winner, Patriots and Broncos. Bears will have to hope Cutler does not throw away games.

I don’t follow other teams closely. Is this good or bad for the Chargers?

On the Cassel trade the Pats stole KC blind. Cassel is not a top 5 QB yet because the Pats franchised him before the trade he’s getting top 5 money. Any time you can get another team to pay way too much for talent you won the deal.
