3 Year Old Attacked by Pit Bull
WYTV ^

Posted on 04/01/2009 10:34:18 AM PDT by Chet 99

A Warren toddler is recovering after being attacked by a pit bull over the weekend.

Three year old Christine Francis required 19 stitches after the animal bit her face. The dog got inside her home on Saturday after her father trapped it on the front porch, hoping animal control officers would come and pick it up. However, due to budget constraints, no one was available.

The girl's father, Thomas Holmes, says he understands the city's financial concerns, but feels an exception should be made when it involves something dangerous. "I know those dogs aren't good to have around. When something like this happens, they should come and get those dogs so nothing like this can happen. That is something she didn't need to go through," Holmes said.

Warren Police Chief John Mandopolis says the animal control officer is normally given permission to come out on overtime when vicious dogs are involved. He says he's not sure why that didn't happen on Saturday.

Next time, call Smith & Wesson.

and of course the story fails to mention who owned the dog or any investigation into where the dog came from?

Megans law allows such IMO. I personally do not need said law to kill a agressive dangerous animal with 2 or 4 legs but nice to know it provides for such !

When did men become such panty-waists? Nowadays, when something like this happens, people are all like "ooohh, I better wait for animal control or someone from the government to help." In times past, the response would've simply been "BOOM!". Problem solved.

But you don’t understand...it wasn’t the dog’s fault. Some men get it.

I’d like to know how the hell did the dog get into the house? Did the dog pretend it was a girl scout with cookies and they opened up the door? Or was this in a neighborhood where there are no doors?

Youngstown / Warren is a cesspool of Dog fighting. I believe it is illegal now in Y’town to have a Pit. Of course the number of dog attacks are way below the daily murder count.

As a responsible owner of a Pit Bull, I hate these stories because this is not who Pits are, it’s who their OWNERS are.

Praying for this little girls recovery.

You're really obsessed with this subject, huh? What do you want? A full ban? There are SO many more rational things to go after than a single breed of dog responsible for like a dozen deaths in America annually.

Pit bulls=Shark attacks=Media irrational Hysteria

I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.

Sharks are not kept as pets.

A dozen deaths by pit bull mauling is a dozen deaths too many.

WHOA, there’s nothing inherently wrong with a Pit Bull. Just like there’s nothing wrong with a loaded gun. But you have to leave both alone.

The wussy man gets the dog cornered on his porch? What kind of stupidity is that? He’s a liberal with no armaments, right?

1- If the dog was VICIOUS toward the man, he had every right to kill it. So I’d suggest he go buy a shotgun and some shells.
2- He’s a total idiot if he gets the dog ON the porch and then doesn’t secure his front door . . . using a chair propped against the doorknob or sliding something heavy across the door. What was he thinking? He’s got a little kid who probably wanted to see ‘the puppy dog.’
3- Why didn’t he call the police and not just ‘animal control?’ Something ain’t right about this whole story.

Treat a vicious dog like a loaded pistol. Keep the kiddies away from it and don’t treat it as if it is a ‘nice puppy dog.’

The man is a runner up for the “I can’t believe stupid people breed” Award.

Pit Bulls that are human aggressive have not been kept as pets either...they’ve been bred, trained and usually mistreated (starved, feed glass shards in their food, beaten and tortured) until they will attack anything. Any breed, or any other animal, will do the same under those circumstances (as will people, check the pedigrees of some serial killers). The reason Pits are singled out for this “training” is due to their muscle mass and their extreme obedience and tenacity. In the UK, Pits are known as “Nanny Dogs” for their watchful eye over the family children, Helen Keller had Pits as service dogs, they are used today as search and rescue, cadaver, and therapy dogs. The most decorated of all Military dogs was a Pit Bull. My own snuggle bunny might lick a burglar to death - that’s the amount of his aggression.

Pits do exhibit animal aggression – of course my childhood collie (i.e…Lassie) killed dogs and other animals that ventured too far onto the farm. Gee, lets ban the evil collies next!

Pit Bulls are terriers – not some mystical spawn of the underworld.

I have seen 5 stories this week on Pit Bull maulings. Please show me the 5 stories of Collie maulings you have seen this week.

Okay - show me the links to the 5 stories....current to “this week.”

Next, Collies WILL bite, but you hear less of these stories because they tend to be a rural dog and if they get inappropriately aggressive, they get shot by the dog owner or the farmer next door (real men, not some patsey metrosexual who has to wait on Animal Control).

Finally, I don’t care. The real story is the owners. When I was a kid, the “bad breed” was German Shepherds. There was a family on the road (rural area) that had 2 and the neighborhood was on freak-out every time Banjo and Bozo (don’t ask) got out of the fenced in yard, though they never ever hurt anything. Today? Those dogs are mainstream. As soon as the money made off Pit fighting disappears, Pit Bulls will also cease to be the terrorist dog of the day and we can get back to the real “bad dogs”..that taco bell mutt and cocker spanials.

So, in your opinion, if the Pit Bull attack doesn’t result in death, it’s not a problem?

According to the CDC, Pit Bulls are responsible for 42% of all dog bite related fatalities. Pit Bulls do not represent anywhere near 42% of the entire dog population. Do the math.

“I have seen 5 stories this week on Pit Bull maulings. Please show me the 5 stories of Collie maulings you have seen this week.”

Exactly. I grew up with a Collie. Yes, they have a tendency to bite, my dog bit twice. But never have I seen one go on the attack, hell bent on killing the victim. My dog now , a Shiba Inu was attacked by a pair of Pits. Thankfully I was ably to reach him and pick him up before they got their jaws in him. That could of just as easily been my toddler in the yard.

I am sure there are a some exceptions out there, but you cant stop a hound from wanting to bark, you cant stop a Basset hound from wanting to dig a hole, and a Pit bull has his own inherit traits we are all aware of.

Do a simple search here on FR.

Of course, collies bite. All dogs will bite something in their lifetimes.

But all dogs don’t attack, maul and kill children and/or adults. I have worked at an animal shelter and have seen many mistreated animals who did not attack people. In fact, most of them, including large dogs like Shepherds and Collies, will cower in front of humans.

Pits are different. You can convince yourself otherwise all you want. You will not convince me. There are too many stories of Pits who were treated well who turned on their owners or neighbors.
