Sources: Ex-Sen. Stevens' Conviction to be Voided
NPR ^ | Nina Totenberg

The Justice Department will drop all charges against former Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, NPR has learned.

A jury convicted Stevens last fall of seven counts of lying on his Senate disclosure form in order to conceal $250,000 in gifts from an oil industry executive and other friends. Stevens was the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, however, he lost his bid for an eighth full term in office just days after he was convicted. Since then, charges of prosecutorial misconduct have delayed his sentencing and prompted defense motions for a new trial.

According to Justice Department officials, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has decided to drop the case against Stevens rather than continue to defend the conviction in the face of persistent problems stemming from the actions of prosecutors.

Later on, Holder is cited as saying he was dropping the charges because of Stevens' age....and the fact that he was ALREADY OUT OF THE SENATE.

Since Murtha is still in congress, can Holder investigate him now?

What a hit job. The Dems sure know how to take down their opponents, don't they?

They did the same thing to Weldon in PA, they raided his Daughters house the week before a very close election. The result of that DOJ raid was the election of Sestak the A-hole. This one was proof that GW should have fired all of the Clinton and leftist people in DOJ when he took over.

Maybe it's me...but I read the article and have no clue what the alleged misconduct was.

Is this what passes for reporting on NPR? I gave up on them years ago, so I may be a little out of date on their standards (such as they are).

Typical. And people thought that it was better to vote for the Democrat... Well, they have this seat now and it’s another 6 years before we can get rid of their guy.

Why Republicans keep falling for this BS is beyond me.

It's the Bush "Justice" Department that perpetrated this atrocity and Bush never tried to right it by pardoning Stevens. In effect, Bush did his own part to give the DemonRats a filibuster proof Senate. Disgusting.

The ONLY thing Bush (the lesser) did right was gitmo and the war on terror

If he had followed the same principled and stucon policy k to his guns in the USA he would have been the greatest president instead he let the Democraps steamroll him just like his father did, and both have given us the biggest democrap fiasco presidencies in history

Let's play "Guess The Party" where you have to identify the party of a politician in trouble based solely on information in the article.

Right there, second sentence of the second paragraph "Stevens was the longest-serving Republican in the Senate". Although later than usual for a Republican, it still is very early in the article. If he was a Democrat that fact would have been buried in paragraph 17 if it was mentioned at all.

What really happened here is honor among thieves. Stevens was given a pass as his fellow senators of both parties recomended that he be let off. Stevens had a lifetime ACU rating of 64 and in 2008, it was 50. He was no conservative.

And with Dodd in big time trouble, far better to let the little fish off the hook so you can use the same rationale for Dodd to avoid prosecution.

He was guilty of holding a Senate seat while being Republican.

The conviction served its purpose - ensuring another Democrat Senate seat. There is no way that the Democrat career prosecutors at the DOJ would want any sort of scrutiny of how the conviction was obtained.

Roberts and Alito were good picks.

an ACU rating of 50 is still better than 0... people need to face facts, any Democratic Senator is nothing more than another vote for Reid, Pelosi and Obama to ram their agenda through.

The point is that the Dems look more favorably upon Stevens than they would an Imhofe if he had a similar problem. They acheived their objective by getting a Dem elected. No need to crucify Stevens any further.
