Police seek culprits after tainted cupcakes poison three dogs in Port Perry park

PORT PERRY, ONT. and TORONTO -- An hour and a half after walking Cally at the nearby park Monday evening, Kim Reeves noticed her poodle was shaking. She jumped in the car and drove Cally to the emergency veterinary clinic in Whitby.

"She kept getting worse and worse. It was horrible," Ms. Reeves said. "She was getting non-responsive almost. Her eyes were closed. She was curled up. ... She was just lying there. Her head kept kind of flopping around. She couldn't stand any more."

Six-year-old Cally was one of three dogs poisoned by tainted chocolate cupcakes and brownies at a popular park in Port Perry, about 75 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

She survived the ordeal. As did Hazel the beagle and Abby the black miniature schnauzer.

Durham Region Police are now looking for the culprits who left the tainted baked goods under a tree near the entrance of the park. They were laced with cannabis, antifreeze or a combination of both, said police spokesman Dave Selby.

Why would you allow your dog to eat chocolate, much less
food left lying around in public?

No chocolate for dogs period.

Well, if the dogs are galloping around in a park, they find things you don’t know about.

Obviously they don’t have leash laws in Toronto.

Chocolate alone could cause a dog’s death.

What STUPID OWNER would have let their dogs eat chocolate?

Well, some parks are designated places where you can let them off the leash.

I was thinking the same thing. Then again, why would someone leave out poison randomly like that. Even a child could have eaten in.

I wonder if this was a dog park? I never go to them (too worried about bad dogs) but if so I suppose the dogs are allowed to be off leash.

Don’t the police have something better to do than chase down people who help clean up parks by putting dogs to sleep? For crying out loud, they’re dogs!

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

They're sure that the cupcakes were "tainted"?

After all, chocolate is rather poisonous to dogs. This could have been someone's leftovers, no attempt to poison anyone need have been intended.

For instance baking chocolate has a huge 450 mg of theobromine per ounce - if the cupcakes were home-made, they are like dog-landmines.

More data for pet-owners who want to know this stuff:

The toxic dose of baking chocolate is 0.1 ounce per pound body weight.

This means that two one-ounce squares of 'baking chocolate' is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

That is a very odd remark. You think it’s ok to leave poisoned food at a park? What if a child had found it, would that be OK since it could be considered “cleaning up the park” by putting children to sleep? Sheesh!

Ok, I bothered to read the article :0)

The cupcakes had cannabis and antifreeze as well.

We went to one and it turned out that our dog was the bad dog. All the other dogs were either playing fetch with their owners or running around together in a well-behaved manner.

Our dog (mid-sized) hadn't been around other dogs very much and a few times he over-reacted when approached by other dogs even though they obviously just wanted to play.

It seemed to me that the dogs who were regulars at this park were socialized to get along, which is probably the behavior enforced by their owners. We were obviously causing a disruption so we left.

Does this surprise anyone? Women have babies and through them in the trash. It doesn’t surprise me that people who are willing to kill their own flesh and blood have no regard for any of God’s creatures.
