“The risk from radiation exposure can be reduced by shortening the time
of exposure, getting farther away from the source, and shielding or
blocking the source. It is known that whole-body radiation doses of
more than 10,000 millirem over a short period of time can cause a
slight increase in a person’s risk of developing some types of cancer
years after exposure. The risk that radiation-induced cancer will
develop during the person’s lifetime is estimated by the National
Academy of Sciences to be about 1/20 of one percent for every 1,000
millirem of short-term exposure greater than 10,000 millirem. In other
words, if you were to receive a short term exposure of 11,000 millirem
(11 rem), your estimated risk of developing some type of cancer would
increase by 0.05 percent.

Not as long as the site as a memorial has political value.

nice photo essay- thanks
Any plans to visit Semipalatinsk in the future? Astounding number of birth deformities as I have read and seen in some photos.
Meanwhile the nuke subs are rusting away in Amursky Bay ... where some villages are so hot they are “off limits” to non residents

I was thinking the same thing about COD 4. That sniper level was straight from the pictures.

Here are some pictures from a field near Chernobyl, where dozens of pieces of machinery stand completely abandoned. All of them have directly participated in the liquidation of a Chernobyl disaster, and thus have been exposed to extreme levels of radiation which in turn made their continuous use lethal to humans.

We move on, now were at the Red Forest. So called because on the night of the accident, the whole forest glowed red. Sorry, your guide BSed you to the hilt. There is no known process to make something radioactive glow red unless you use special coats, etc. You can detect the light blue glow of radioactive metals, especially in a water pool, but certainly not a piece of wood.
Red Forest was either a code name after the incident, or a pre-existing name.

All the chlorophyll turned red as the trees died from the radiation. The trees literally turned red. That's where the name came from.

Thanks for the topic and the pings.
Another monument to the workers’ paradise!
It doesn’t look all that different from its heyday. ;’)
