Why are we being bombarded with all of this Cathholic Hog Wash? This is supposed to be a forum for new news and political discussion. Now we are flooded with all of this Religious what ever. If I wanted to read or be exposed to all of that I would join their Church.
Please limit yourself to one glass after dinner.
I would agree with that. Strongly agree.
At least SOME of us have learned! LOL.
“She just happens to intervene when people pray to her.”
Too many folks (non-Catholics) get the impression that Catholics worship Mary. We don’t. A ‘prayer’ in this context is simply a request.
Here is my understanding of it.
First of all we are a conservative forum. The first principle in conservatism, according to Russell Kirk and others that have studied the history of that school of thought, is Order. That includes Order for Man as well as Order for the state.
Order for Man, and by extension, the state is a moral order that most believe comes from God.
So at bottom, most political questions are moral and religious questions.
Remember that conservatives aren't reactionaries standing athwart the path of history, yelling “Stop.” Instead, we conservatives recognize the value of what we have inherited and seek to preserve it by careful reform.
What this all produces is an adherence and appreciation for our moral and cultural heritage. We have discussions about orthodox interest in all manner of religious and moral thought. Those that don't find much interest in the theological, find philosophical, ethical and morality constants of equal import to them outside the theological domain.
Now, we do recognize that many of us come from areas of thought or geography that are relatively isolated from some of the varied aspects of our broad and varied cultural heritage. We find ourselves exposed to Evangelical, Catholic, Orthodox, Jewish, Confessing, and Free Thinking aspects that are at first confounding.
The owner of the forum and his bright young son have put in software programming where we can, in the vast majority, exclude or include most of such threads depending upon our taste. You perhaps haven't investigated in the right hand side of the page as to how that is done. But, first consider how isolated it is to merely converse and read only those things of your immediate interest.
Chesterton points out that the truly broadening event, the truly Christianizing event, the truly great event of our lives comes when we are dropped down the chimney and find ourselves part of a varied family — with others that are different. That is the event that gives us growth and tolerance, wisdom and understanding, hope and forgiveness.
My world in broadened by my exposure to positive aspects of that wide heritage and I hope yours will be as well. Hayek taught us that the English/Scottish Enlightenment (imitated poorly by the French rationalists) was largely Empirical and a slow, often accidental process of finding Liberty that truly works and culture with true value.
There are only room for twenty threads about Obama’s birth certificate each day. We have to have a full and complete life.
Christ founded the Catholic Church. It’s right there in your (redacted) Bible.
You never ask anyone to pray for you?
Actually, I think it’s been over a year since I had even my one glass with a dinner. And that year it was only one or 2 that whole year at one or 2 different dinners.
Y’all be the ones with the communion wine!
I was thinking about Biblewonk the other day, he was always a lot of fun to spar with.
Say, how are those UFO angels doing, or are they demons, I forget.
I guess I'll remote view your mind and see what I find out. . .hope you don't mind.
I'm with you, those UFO demons/angels are religious manifestations of far greater relevance and credibility than that silly Catholic Church.
(You are right, this is fun mocking other’s believe)
Well, that's just plain silly. The very word "catholic" means universal or worldwide.
To put the word "Roman" in front of it makes it the Roman Worldwide Church.
It is self-negating. Kinda like Compassionate Conservatism.
Conservatism is by its very nature compassionate. To qualify it is to nullify it.
Wow. That was pretty profound if I do say so myself.
Which I do since I doubt anybody else will.
“She just happens to intervene when people pray to her.
Too many folks (non-Catholics) get the impression that Catholics worship Mary. We dont. A prayer in this context is simply a request.”
And the scriptural basis for praying to anyone other than God or Christ would be?
Only with the living. Mary, your deceased relatives, and others dead are not available to intercede for us.
Read your Bible. Show me where your concept is supported in Scripture.
What is the scriptural basis for requiring a scriptural basis?
Yikes. I better go put some clothes on.
Ok, here’s the official word. If you don’t like religious threads, stay off them. If you don’t like Catholic threads, stay off them. If you don’t like religious freedom, you’re on the wrong site.
Well stated.
If you bother to seriously read Cardinal Newman’s “The Catholic Church” you’d end up what thousands have done and convert in a mili-second.
