Many years ago, we had a neighborhood version of "Caddyshack". We had moles and voles that were feasting on flower bulbs. "Someone" got angry and learned that a Bernzomatic MAPP torch could be stuffed down the molehole, and the valve pressed halfway down, so ignition was delayed, and the hole flooded with MAPP gas and air. Then the button was pressed, and the sparker fired,and the gas exploded. Too much flooding time would cause flying soil and rocks, so experience had to be gained.

Others in the neighborhood thought it was neat, so Saturday mornings often were punctuated with muffled thumps and vibrations in the ground.

The practice seemed to stop years ago. I do not know whether people got bored with it, or ran out of moles.

I guess moles or voles have two levels to their tunnels. The top level is for cruising and the lower level is where they live, and other methods like smoke bombs could not get both levels. Air/Fuel explosives could. They probably killed by consuming all the oxygen.

Of course, it created carbon dioxide, so you'd have to live with yourself for causing Global Warming Climate Change.

May I recommend putting up a small windmill and driving a pole or pipe into the ground. The vibration from the windmill drive them off. I got this from the “Farmers Alamanc"

Wow great suggestion. I just did some research and there are companies that sell such windmills. Sounds like they're relatively cheap and really built for the lazy mole chaser.

What is THE best way to kill them?

Go to a garden center and purchase a lawn treatment consisting of the chem. Disiston. This chem. will kill the Worms and Grubs in your yard. If you get rid of these pest, I guarantee 100% you will be rid of the pest.These pest are the reason you have the Moles.

Is there a reason you want to exterminate them? I've lived quite harmoniously with them in the past - moles aerate the soil and help moisture find its way deep into the ground - important in dry, hot, hard-soiled areas like here in Texas.

If the only reason you don't like them is the Bugs-bunny-type mounded trails they create, try a multi-pronged approach. Get a cat (mine caught dozens), spray the soil with a castor oil/water solution, use a common device to shake up the soil and disrupt their lives (I think the brand name is Klipity-klop.)

We had a dog that was part JR terrier. She was an absolute KILLER on moles. Now we have a little foo-foo dogand even though he hates moles, too, he just doesn’t have the strength to dig them up quickly and dispatch them.

Our neighbor is sort of eccentric. He will sit quietly in his yard waiting for movement and then shoot into the ground with a shotgun. Yes, we live in Redneckville, TN.

You have moles because you have grubs in your lawn.

Moles eat grubs.

To get rid of the moles, kill the grubs.

I killed the grubs once and got rid of the moles, but now I just live with the moles because killing the grubs kills all the other little critters in your lawn, like toads, worm snakes, frogs, etc. As soon as you put the stuff down you can see all kinds of things crawling out of your lawn in their death throes.

I had a mole problem and nothing worked until I got some ant and grub killer (Brand name “Sevin”) and spread it liberally on my lawn. Kill thier food supply and moles will go elsewhere. At least they did in my case.

I was amazed at how effective the JRTs are. No big holes or anything. They find their target and take them out like snipers.

I do the tamping down, sitting and waiting thing, also. Then, I cut off their tunnel by shoving a spade behind them and flood their tunnel with water from a hose. When they come up through the ground for air, smack them upside the head with a shovel. I also keep a bucket of water handy (in case I just stunned them), put them in the bucket, and let them drown. It’s groce, but it works. I’ve found they work the ground early morning, about lunchtime, and early evening, not just at night.
