Actor Ron Silver, who won a Tony Award as a take-no-prisoners Hollywood producer in David Mamet's "Speed-the-Plow" and did a political about-face from loyal Democrat to Republican activist after the Sept. 11 attacks, died Sunday at the age of 62.

"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him early Sunday morning" in New York City, said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped found. "He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years."

From the inane "Those are our planes now..." to a righteous defender of freedom and liberty in the face of those who seek to destroy it, in just a few short years.

The guy knew how to grow as a person. Horrible to see him shuffle off so young.

He will be missed. FWIW, I have always gotten a kick out of his acting. I need to go back and watch two movies in particular:

The Arrival where played lead bad guy Phil Gordian (and a Mexican guard)

and

as Senator Aaron McComb in Timecop

RIP Mr. Silver.

So do all the conservatives die young (Tony Snow, Ron Silver) and the liberals live to enslave us permanently? (Ted Kennedy)

He taught Spanish for several years in the 1960s at Roosevelt High School, a Jewish boarding school in Connecticut. Because of his knowledge of Chinese, he got a job with the US Government and traveled to Taiwan in the early 1970s.

I agree w/all the posters...Ron Silver was a great actor, a mensch and brave to risk his career by supporting GWB and the war.

That’s why it’s disturbing to read this from the Slimes

“Mr. Silver’s only marriage ended in divorce. In addition to his brother Mitchell, who lives in Newton, Mass., he is survived by his parents, who live in Manhattan; another brother, Keith, of Stamford, Conn.; a son, Adam, of Los Angeles; and a daughter, Alexandra, of Manhattan. His acting awed them, his politics confounded them, Mitchell Silver said.

“Ron’s politics, as far as I know, were not shared by anyone he knew, except for the people he knew because of his politics,” Mitchell Silver said. He paused and added: “He told me that he did vote for Barack Obama in the end”

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/16/movies/16silver.html

I guess one brother can be a mensch and the other a major league a—hole. Mitchell, wherever you are, I’m sorry for your loss, obviously you learned nothing from your brother..

He’s the guy who said he was appalled when the Air Force did a flyover at the Clinton inauguration, but then remembered: “Those are OUR planes now!”
