Diesel says future Riddick films will go to Underverse and Furya

Vin Diesel, who revealed earlier this week that David Twohy was writing another Chronicles of Riddick film, offered more details on Friday and clarified that only part of the film would have a smaller scale, a la the predecessor film Pitch Black. Diesel told a conference call last week that the film would open with Riddick struggling to survive alone against carnivorous monsters.

"There is a scaled-down portion of this that goes back to the Pitch Black style of telling the story," Diesel said in a group interview in Hollywood, where he was promoting Fast & Furious. "It's hot."

Diesel added that his plan is still to have four Riddick films in total. The third would only be part two of what he always envisioned as a trilogy to follow Pitch Black.

"Well, you remember when I had talked about Riddick, I talked about Riddick as being the Fellowship in the Tolkien [Lord of the Rings] series. So I was using Pitch Black as Hobbit, as the independent story that introduces you to the world of Middle-earth, and then taking The Chronicles of Riddick and treating it as a trilogy that goes from the story that you saw to the Underverse and ultimately to Furya in the third film."

Twohy's current script is not quite set to complete the Furya journey, so there is still one more film planned.

"Yeah, absolutely," Diesel said. "That's exactly what I'm saying. So if you think of Pitch Black as an introduction to the world—if you think of Lord of the Rings, and I'm just using it as a parallel—you're thinking of Lord of the Rings, there are three books, a trilogy. You would think of The Chronicles of Riddick as the first in that trilogy, and there will be two more to follow."

Pitch Black was a movie I avoided until I heard about Riddick. I had read that Diesel had bought the rights to PB after he started to get recognition and that he wanted to do video games, cartoons etc. He seems like a smart businessman. He was great in Boiler Room as well. The Riddick film took a few viewings before I understood what a great piece of SciFi it was. It was well acted and my favorite character was that bitchy actress that played the second in command’s wife ala Lady McBeth. The DVD set of Riddick which you can get for under 10 bucks now comes with an animated piece that continues the story after PB ends. Keep it up Diesel.

TOTALLY underrated movies. I loved Chronicles, and look forward to seeing more of them.

I liked Pitch Black. It was especially good considering the budget. However Riddick was more reminiscent of those old European sci-fi movies where no one can figure out what’s going on. The plot, if you can call it such, meanders back and forth and changes midstream, earlier ideas discarded and new ones inserted without much coherency except maybe the idea that “Hey this is cool”.

I’m surprised that they would make another Riddick. But then I’m surprised that there are reality shoes.

I actually like Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick..

I did too but preferred Pitch Black. That was pretty scary. I recently saw the new Babylon picture which I didn't like very much.

All in all tho, Diesel is perfect in the Riddick series and I hope they continue with it.......

You probably don't remember him because, at the time, he was a nobody.

That was actually a small part in the film wasn't it? He got killed too didn't he?

What you said...

Kinda campy, but good sci-fi fun. I still liked PB better than Chronicles, but I'd queue up for a 3rd if it looks like it doesn't suck.

Yup. He was killed about a third of the way through. His part was fairly prominent up to that point, though.
