OK, you have a number N which is made up of digits X and Y so:
N = 10X + Y
Now, you subtract X and Y from N to get a new number G (for gift!):
G = N - X - Y = (10X + Y) - X - Y = 9X
So, whatever two-digit number you pick, you’ll end up with a result that is a multiple of 9. If you look at the chart that someone posted, every give with a number that is a multiple of 9 (e.g. 9, 18, 27, 36, 45...) is the same.
