A Rosemount teen got to play high roller for a day after finding a plastic bag containing $18,000 in a highway ditch, and he gave away thousands of dollars to classmates on Tuesday before authorities got involved.
Dakota County officials are releasing few details about the source of the money, but they have a pretty compelling clue: When the student, 16, led them back to the spot where he found the money, they discovered 4 pounds of marijuana and some scales.
"This is tied in to drugs, obviously," said Sgt. Joe Leku of the Dakota County Drug Task Force. He would not disclose other details of the case, saying it could jeopardize the investigation.
Investigators learned that a student had been handing out $100 bills when a school bus company reported it to a school resource officer on Tuesday, said Chief Dakota County Deputy David Bellows. The boy had given out thousands of dollars before deputies started going back and collecting the money. They recovered almost all of it, Bellows said.
When the boy first told them he'd found the money in a ditch, investigators were skeptical.

I'd have done two things...
1. Kept the money.
2. Kept my mouth closed.
Comments or opinions - anyone?
me too.
hush!
The cops are mad because they didn’t get their hands on it first .... for, you know what ....
Damn right, keep it, and keep your mouth shut. Don’t make it obvious, either.
Silly kid.
Carefully counting out the $1,800 and putting it into the evidence inventory.
Too funny!
with the other $16,200 distributed amungst the officers.
Right - last media thing about found money was like 200K but somehow only 100K wound up in inventory ...hmmmmm
Every six months or so you will read a news story about someone who found a bag with a large sum of money and called the police or returned the money.
Makes you wonder, how often do people find large sums of cash and do not call the police or try to find who the money belonged.
If the pot was in the same location as the money, why wasn't the pot and scales taken by the student too?
Was the pot planted in an effort to confiscate the cash?
The serial numbers may have been tracked. Best to widely disburse the money as best you can and claim you were handed some too.
The police will now throw it into their own kitty for whatever they want to spend it on.
Revenue tickets will still be issued because that is how day to day operational expenses are met.
The boy surely did what was proper by ‘sharing the wealth’ as written in the 1st book of Obama. I pray that the boy suffers no punishment for his attempt to follow the scripture. Obama hear our prayer.

Doesn't seem to be the case here.
I would imagine a kid handing out C notes at the bus stop would get some attention.

My guess is that the drug dealer was either being pulled over or approaching a road block and was able to ‘ditch’ the cash and drugs. Just a guess though...
I think impersonating a president is a crime...
Ding ding ding...Cops were mad because they gots to get paid.
