An Allen woman said she got a painful reminder two weeks ago of the wild -- while jogging in a suburban neighborhood.
The 39-year-old woman, who asked she not be identified, said a coyote took a bite out of her thigh as she rounded a curve on a popular Allen jogging trail.
"I think I surprised it," she said. "That's what the problem was. It was dark, really quiet, and it probably thought I was attacking it."

Dog(s) are a good first line of defense. A good handgun a second line of defense.
Eastern coyotes have been known to bait dogs into chasing an individual coyote. The single coyote will then lead the domestic dog(s) into an ambush by a pack of coyotes. It happened to a couple of my neighbors' dogs.

Yes, I was wondering about that. Do doctors automatically begin bite victims on the rabies vaccine when they’re unable to test the animal? They used to but there’s no mention of it in this article.
Of course, we also have the usual Texas critters, nine banded armadillos, squirrels, cardinals, blue jays, sparrows, hummingbirds, grass snakes, garter snakes, chicken snakes, mockingbirds, red tail hawks, etc.
They're wild animals. They've never been a problem, other than coyotes attacking the cat. The closest I came to having a problem was surprising a deer while I was out jogging. It was a buck with a pretty good rack, and he started at me then turned and ran. A white tail deer can be quite a handful.
Absolutely this woman is getting the rabies vaccine if her doctor has anything to do with it - she could refuse. It’s not so bad, not in the stomach any more - one gamma globulin for immediate passive immunity, and then a series of the killed vaccine for the active immunity.
That’s interesting. I didn’t realize you could refuse the rabies vaccine under these circumstances, where the animal couldn’t be tested.
A rabid human can infect others, after all.
The is nonsense. Coyotes are scavengers and regardless of how badly you “scare” them...they run away. Coyotes don’t attack.

People all over Southern California went out with torches and guns and all killed hundreds of coyotes before the police had to admit it was abuse.
The press never did correct the story.

Although I do agree they only seem likely to attack when in packs of three or more.
Two will run away, three will look at you and almost confer with each other whether to advance on you.

If the coyote is rabid, all bets are off. Rabid animals do all kinds of things they wouldn’t normally do.
