On the market: Teenage Gypsy girls glam up for annual bride sale (with pictures)

Dressed in their finest clothes and gold jewellery, thousands of teenage Roma girls were paraded around by their parents this weekend - at an open-air brides market.

Wearing lots of make-up, the teenagers came to the traditional annual market in Bulgaria, hoping to find a husband - and preferably one willing to pay a large amount of money for his future spouse.

'We take our daughters to this gathering so they could get acquainted with boys, for we do not allow our children to go to discos,' explains Elena from Kapitan Andreevo.

At the market in the village of Mogila near Stara Zagora, the price of a beautiful young woman is said to be several thousand levs/euros.

Younger siblings came along too to play and eat sweets while one newly-wed couple bellydanced on top of an old car to show their happiness at finding a match.

Several wannabe-brides joined in, showing their eagerness to be married.

The event takes place on the first Saturday after the start of the orthodox Easter fast - the Day of Saint Todor, or Horse Easter.

This year the gathering attracted some 2,000 people who came from all over southern Bulgaria including Plovdiv, Pasardzhik, Sliven and Jambol.

For those who swing the other way, she'll introduce them to her friend "Lefty".

Good reply.

Some people have no sense of history nor of any culture but their own.

I think most Western people today would be shocked to death if they found themselves in the Judah of 27 AD or so.

I don’t know what kind of world you live in but my own marriage has lasted almost 30 years and is still going strong and we dated for two years and got to know each other exclusively before committing. Our union was blessed by God.

My mother dated my father for three years and they met while roller skating and going out afterward to get ice cream. Their marriage lasted over 50 years.

My grandmother was wooed by a man who fell in love with her while delivering her mail. He put a love letter in her mailbox one day and they started dating. They dated for four years before being married. They were married almost 60 years before he died.

America’s way of dating was a whole lot more wholesome before the women’s feminist movement came around and hurt normal relationships between men and women.

These poor women are strutting around like meat chops in a market. The men will bid on them like a purchase. There is no dating, no getting to know one another first over several years, it’s just an arranged affair and I’m sure most of the relationships that result out of this kind of market will not last. Superficial things like looks are not what marriage should be based on. The foundation should be much deeper than that. In previous generations Americans used to know that by default. Not any more.

You said — “I don’t know what kind of world you live in but my own marriage has lasted almost 30 years and is still going strong and we dated for two years and got to know each other exclusively before committing. Our union was blessed by God.”

In case you haven’t noticed the culture you currently live in, they don’t stay married for 30 (more or less) years. In fact, the divorce rate is sky-high. In addition to that, more and more are bypassing marriage altogether, as unnecessary. Furthermore, many women are having kids without dads around or even being married at all, much less having a guy “live in” with them...

It would appear that you’re the one who is *totally out of touch* with the society that you currently live in. It also appears that since you do things a certain way and have been married for a certain length of time, and dated in a certain way — that you think everyone else does the same. That’s really being *out of touch* with today’s society...

And so, the “dating process” is not a “moral issue” to be followed. “Dating” has nothing — in and of itself — that lends itself to “morality”. People “date” today and jump into bed with serial dating relationships with no problems at all — and that’s “dating”... as we have it today. Perhaps some will say, “not until the third date” — which (I suppose) makes it “more moral” in that case... LOL...

No, the dating process is only a cultural item of this particular time we live in. In Jesus Christ’s day, it was a guy went to the house, offered to marry the gal, laid down the money for the girl, laid down the contract, and she chose whether to take him up on it or not...

And, that’s the process that Christ used for an *example* of us being the “Bride of Christ” in the Bible — in that “He paid the price for us”, just like men “paid the price” for their brides in Jesus’ day.

There’s nothing wrong with that example of paying money for the bride, as they did in Jesus’ day...

That’s the way the Bible presents it to us...

And so, the process of “dating” contain *absolutely nothing* — inherently — in making it a “more sanctified process” than what the people in Jesus’ day did, and which the Bible uses for an example to us for “being saved”...

“There’s nothing wrong with that example of paying money for the bride.”

I paid for Mrs. MWT as part of a contract called a “ketubah.”

That’s what the wedding ring is — payment.

The addition of the ring to the man is a new invention.

You’re the one who keeps bringing up the Bible, not me. It’s got nothing to do with this topic.

My marriage, my mother’s marriage, my grandmother’s marriage would not have resulted without dating the old fashioned American way, boys and girls getting to know one another through friendship first before relationships deepen. All our marriages are or were blessed by God. Customs change but wholesome dating - as opposed to sleeping with someone before marriage - is a tried and true way to build a relationship, to decide whether or not you really love the person enough to spend the rest of your life with them.

Women today in America who act like sluts before marriage will not find lasting happiness. They really are no different from the poor gypsy ladies of this article, just the venue has changed. If they were taught that God loves them as people they might just hold out for something better for themselves. The other way is just cheap.

You said — “You’re the one who keeps bringing up the Bible, not me. It’s got nothing to do with this topic.”

It’s got everything to do with this topic. The Bible makes the “bride price” that a man pays for his bride, to be a “Christian example” of how Christ has “paid the bride price” for us, as Christians.

It fits the particulars of the story in the essence of the idea...

And then you said — “My marriage, my mother’s marriage, my grandmother’s marriage would not have resulted without dating the old fashioned American way, boys and girls getting to know one another through friendship first before relationships deepen. All our marriages are or were blessed by God. Customs change but wholesome dating - as opposed to sleeping with someone before marriage - is a tried and true way to build a relationship, to decide whether or not you really love the person enough to spend the rest of your life with them.”

Dating has no special significance in relation to “morals”. It’s a “nothing” — and if anything, a total “neutral” in the issue. Dating someone (even if one has a perfect marriage over many years and handled themselves perfectly) does *nothing* for one’s morals.

And, furthermore *paying a bride price* for someone you marry — is in no way “immoral” — not at all. Doing that does not make it something (oh boy...!!) immoral... LOL..

The fact that it’s not immoral to “pay a bride price” for a woman that you want to marry — is the example that the book of the *highest morals* the world has ever known — gives *this* as an example of the “salvation of Christ” — in that “He paid a bride price” for us, in our salvation...

Now, your marriage may have been blessed by God, and that is good, but it had nothing to do with some “sanctifying dating”. Dating has nothing to do with one’s marriage being blessed by God.

The “tried and true” method for having a marriage that was blessed of God, in the time of Jesus — was to pay a “bride price” for the girl that the guy was wanting to marry. They entered into a contract and he went away to fix their place to be, and then he came back to get her, having paid that price. *That* was the “tried and true” method for having God-blessed marriages — by example in the Bible, and that’s a standard for us. Now, admittedly, no one, these days, wants to follow that example any more, but that is the example.

Dating has *no example* in the Bible, but is only a “recent cultural invention” having nothing to do with “God-blessed marriages”...

If you want to live 2000 years ago in your own mind, go to it honey, but you’re not going to convince gypsy girls (or trashy American girls for that matter) to not sell themselves to the highest bidder by throwing bible verses at them and watching their eyes glass over and see them run away from you laughing their heads off.

You can simply tell them when the time is right that God loves them and that He has something better planned for them than a marriage meat market. And you can tell their clueless mothers that too.

Baby steps first, the milk first, and then once they are interested in God THEN you can get them on the meat of the Word. You’re putting the cart before the horse. These girls are interested in marriage, not prophecy.
