RIO DE JANEIRO A Roman Catholic archbishop says the abortion of twins carried by a 9-year-old girl who allegedly was raped by her stepfather means excommunication for the girl's mother and her doctors.
Despite the nature of the case, the church had to hold its line against abortion, Archbishop Jose Cardoso Sobrinho said in an interview aired Thursday by Globo television.
"The law of God is higher than any human laws," he said. "When a human law that is, a law enacted by human legislators is against the law of God, that law has no value. The adults who approved, who carried out this abortion have incurred excommunication."

So you and the murdering doctors say.
When they excommunicate all Catholics that have had abortions, then they’ll have credence. This bishop just gave so much fodder for the pro-choice side to feed on.
Constancy in situational ethics?? And possibly let the 9 year and twins die?? Sometimes, I would rather be rational than ethical.
Unless her life was at risk from carrying the pregnancy then it needs to be chalked up to a sad tragedy. But if you believe that life begins at conception what other option is there? really?
I suppose size would matter here, but I would guess not. This is an absolute tragedy for the little girl and I'm afraid this Bishop has done far more damage to the pro-life movement than he has good.
Its a narrow path...
Everyone with half an ounce of brains knows that abusing a 9yo girl is a mortal sin and disqualifies a Catholic from receiving Communion.
OTOH, there are people who appear to be normal and intelligent, and who nevertheless think that medically executing two innocent children is a proper response to a problem. Those people, if they claim to be Catholics, are automatically excommunicated.
huh? I’m no catholic but I am pretty sure they believe while you may receive divine forgiveness you need to live out the earthly consequences for your actions..
right turning a blind eye to abortions that are ‘popular’ thats how we will ‘further’ the cause of life..
Procuring, aiding, or performing an abortion results in automatic excommunication for any Catholic according to canon law, so I guess you can now say that "they" have "credence".
No, I think that’s a knee-jerk reaction to this story. Oh, those awful Catholics look what they’re doing! Pick out this incident and use it to attack one of the staunchest pro-life institutions that exists. I don’t like knee-jerk reactions.
Who says the step-father was Catholic in the first place? And they weren’t in a position to stop her from having the abortion and she had it.
Which one?
I’m not wading into the morality, or lack thereof of this situation, but I really find it hard to believe that a 9 year ld was able to conceive!!
12, maybe, but 9!!!
At what age are girls starting puberty now!!
That’s the question, even the most ardent of pro life people should make way for a *real* and *substantial* danger to the life of the mother.
So you would sacrifice HER life to satisfy your ethics and morals. That's so brave.
I was wondering that too. Nine seems awfully young to be able to conceive. Though there are rare cases of cycles starting that early or earlier.
And the man who raped the 9-year old has not been excommunicated (wouldn’t want to set a precedent there)
Yup. We call it the distinction between the temporal and spiritual consequences of sin. God forgives the spiritual consequences upon repentance, but leaves the temporal consequences to us and those who will pray for us.
Let's just stop the killing. Stop justifying it, stop excusing it, stop defending it, stop doing it.
Nine is unusually early. However, one of the factors in early puberty is a history of sexual exposure/abuse. Who knows what this girl had been through before the pregnancy at least brought attention to it?
