Question for Admin Moderator

Posted on 03/05/2009 10:24:29 AM PST by Behind Liberal Lines

So what's the deal now with excerpts now? I see you're editing articles to one or two sentences even if they were excerpted by the poster to begin with.

I thought 300 words was the excerpting standard.

A platoon ... like I been tellin' ya, they're a platoon. They use tactics, I tell ya!

...

And that's what I really think of these outrageous tactics and measures.

For those reading along, the dot dot dot in between paragraphs or sentences serves to show a 'snip' has been made in the text.

Doesn’t matter. If they’re laughing, they’re too busy to press the “smite” button.

This is one of the main reasons I rarely post articles anymore. That, and the thread police who apparently have nothing better to do than find duplicate posts.

That can be a good thing. There are exceptions.

....yeah, and since the MSM seems to be getting so slack at checking sources, etc., it is not like the news from the MSM is necessarily that much more accurate or credible...LOL

I prefer the elipses to ‘snip’.

FR use to have a policy for posting you longer have or I must have missed?

elipses?

Correct spelling -- ellipsis: 'a three-dot symbol used to show an incomplete statement.' The plural would be 'ellipses'.

Thanks, but most people (non-English majors) would have no idea what that symbol meant. They are far more familiar with "snip" or "...".

FR用途有您長期有的投稿的一項政策或我一定丟失了?

So far, there's no rule against posting incomplete thoughts in Chinese, and I hope that day never comes.

I first “found out” about this yesterday, when after posting over a hundred articles I had one pulled for the first time:

the reason? I posted an entire Bloomberg article rather than an excerpt.

Okay, I thought. I’d excerpt it and post again.

And the same article got pulled again. This time? Reason stated, “Bloomberg content.” So I guess you can’t even excerpt Bloomberg content.

I would much prefer to see a “policy” link on the home page so we might have some chance of knowing what is and isn’t allowed.

I don’t want to waste my time posting to Freerepublic if it’s going to get pulled. Why bother? At some point Freerepublic is going to have to provide some guidelines where people can actually see them.

It’s not the moderators’ faults per se, but it seems that somebody somewhere is pulling an Obama and making decisions without bothering to explain the rules.

Let’s face it: we love this site, and Jim provides a valuable service, but the design and utility of this site is circa 1999 at this point.

Freerepublic has helped me get my own message out to more people - which has always been my goal. And they have been very good in the past. But something has obviously recently changed, and not for the better.

I understand if mag/news sources are trying to pressure sites like FR. And they have to do what they have to do. All I want is that they provide the criterion for pulling articles so I know what to do.
