Area Schomaker of Lincoln said he never intended to hurt the 6-month-old cat, Shadow.
Sheriff's deputies responding to a domestic disturbance at the residence fined the 20-year-old Schomaker on suspicion of misdemeanour animal cruelty on Sunday after catching him smoking marijuana from a boxlike contraption that had the cat stuffed inside its 12-inch by 6-inch base.
Schomaker's girlfriend, Marissa Vieux, also was fined for animal cruelty because she didn't try to stop Schomaker, Sgt Andy Stebbing said.
Vieux, 22, said she took in the cat about two months ago from friends who abused it.
Schomaker said the cat would bite and scratch them but he did nt want to discipline it by swatting or squirting water at it. He said they did not bring it to an animal shelter because they feared it would be put down.
So Schomaker said he decided to use the makeshift pipe because he had heard about people calming their pets by blowing marijuana smoke in their faces.
"I know for sure this isn't the first time someone has done this," he said. "I'm just the first one to get caught."
He said he put the cat in the bong a total of three times and it seemed to calm the cat.

Wow, hotboxing a cat. I just give mine some catnip. She goes bonkers for a little while until the high leaves her. Then she just lies there for a while seemingly uninterested in the world and goes to sleep.
Some folk are too dumb to own animals.
This world is getting weirder and weirder......
“He said he put the cat in the bong a total of three times and it seemed to calm the cat.”
Yes, but then the cat started ordering lots of pizza, lost it’s job, voted for Obamma, and is likely to be living in it’s Mom’s basement well into his late 40’s.
.
I gave my cat catnip once- it was crazy! but he never showed any interest in it after the first time.
Do you think they get a ‘hangover’ from it?
LMAO!!!!!!
I’m not sure. I know some cats go nuts for it, others are indifferent to it.
The cats we have had over the years have really liked it. Typically, I’ll put a little down on the floor and the cat will proceed to lick it, sniff it, and roll in it. Then they get really frisky and start attacking anything toy or object they see. After the high, they tend to become very docile.
ROTFLMAO!
If putting cats in bongs is made illegal, only criminals will stuff cats into bongs.
[Little liberaltarian logic there for you. ;-) ]
I wonder if i gave him too much the first time.
I broght the box home and he attacked it- it was all over the place (the whole box!) when i came home and he was going NUTS
Maybe he OD’d and didnt want to repeat the experience.
I think the guy probably read about kitten-huffing at:

... which is, of course, a totally fact-free spoof of Wikipedia.
Sad to say, I knew some guys in college who would often try and get their cat stoned. I also knew a guy who would share his beer with his pet rabbit (they would take turns drinking out of the can). The rabbit absolutely loved beer. One time I watched the rabbit when he (the guy I knew) sat down on the couch and popped the top on a can of beer. The rabbit heard that sound from across the room (had not been looking), turned around, took one jump over to the coffee table, and one jump over it onto the sofa next to him and started nosing up in his face for his share of the beer.
People do stupid things (especially when you add drugs or alcohol).
I have read that they get high and crazy for 20 minutes, then need about half an hour to "reset", wherein they can start the process over again from baseline. (they don't get higher and higher, nor do they need increasing doses to achieve the same affect). Interestingly, Valerian root has the same active ingredient as catnip, as I found out one day when my kitty managed to open the pill container and spill them all over, eating some of them. Then she attacked me.
