Word For The Day, Wednesday, March 4, 2009 - oligopsony
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary Word of the Day ^ | 03/04/2009

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

oligopsony • \ah-luh-GAHP-suh-nee\ • noun
a market situation in which each of a few buyers exerts a disproportionate influence on the market

Example sentence:

The elimination of small local vendors by a handful of national chain groceries has created an oligopsony where farmers cannot receive fair prices for their yields.

Did you know?
You're probably familiar with the word "monopoly," but you may not recognize its conceptual and linguistic relative, the much rarer "oligopsony." Both "monopoly" and "oligopsony" are ultimately from Greek, although "monopoly" passed through Latin before being adopted into English. "Monopoly" comes from the Greek prefix “mono-" (which means "one") and “pōlein” ("to sell"). "Oligopsony" derives from the combining form “olig-" ("few") and the Greek noun “opsōnia” ("the purchase of victuals"), which is ultimately from the combination of “opson ("food") and “ōneisthai” ("to buy"). It makes sense, then, that "oligopsony" refers to a "buyers' market" in which the seller is subjected to the potential demands of a limited pool of buyers. Another related word is "monopsony," used for a more extreme oligopsony in which there is only a single buyer.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

glad that went ok. no delays today, though i hadn’t stopped to look/listen to see before we left the house and i had a vague thought that MAYBE bc there are still snow piles on the streets there might be, but i turned on WMAL and no mention and everyone was there when i got xsbrownie to school. at least twice last year, prior to xsboy driving himself to school, we blithely left the house and were surpised to see no one in the parking lot yet when i got him there bc of a 2 hour delay i was unaware of.

Just call it extra credit. It’s kind of a fun word with lots of fun picture potential.

The phone rang at 6:15 this morning and I heard the dulcet tones of the superintendent.......

signing up for those calls was a very smart move on my part, there were far too many mornings of waiting for the bus only to find out that school was delayed or canceled!!!!

Obozo wants to take us from an oligopsony of health care providers to a government run monopoly which will result in higher prices and rationing.

well now that you mention it, i DID get an automated call from xsbrownie’s school on Monday evening for Tues delayed arrival, so that’s further proof i didn’t need to worry this Am since they hadn’t called. i prefer to just look on WTOP’s website to getting called in the AM, esp if they make the decision the night before.

There would have been more plusses, but for some reason there aren't any CZJ pics on that thread yet.

We haven’t moved into the 21st century yet around here -— so just calls, no email.

I don’t mind the morning calls because it is generally pretty hit or miss about which TV station or website will post the info, and the few radio stations that I get reception of in the house seem to rarely mention school closings.

There is one local FM station that is pretty good about stuff like that, but I don’t like their overall programing, so rarely think to tune it in.

Yesterday the TV station out of Maryland has the closing before the Virginia Beach station. And neither ever bothered alphabetizing the list, so the listing for Accomac was showing up AFTER Northampton.......

Whoa! A word I didn’t know. As I am not reading very much of the news these days (too depressing, and I need to work more effectively), I am clearly not a member of the oligopsony. (Besides, as my tagline shows, I don’t like Sony anyway.)
