In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
oligopsony \ah-luh-GAHP-suh-nee\ noun
a market situation in which each of a few buyers exerts a disproportionate influence on the market
Example sentence:
The elimination of small local vendors by a handful of national chain groceries has created an oligopsony where farmers cannot receive fair prices for their yields.
Did you know?
You're probably familiar with the word "monopoly," but you may not recognize its conceptual and linguistic relative, the much rarer "oligopsony." Both "monopoly" and "oligopsony" are ultimately from Greek, although "monopoly" passed through Latin before being adopted into English. "Monopoly" comes from the Greek prefix mono-" (which means "one") and pōlein ("to sell"). "Oligopsony" derives from the combining form olig-" ("few") and the Greek noun opsōnia ("the purchase of victuals"), which is ultimately from the combination of opson ("food") and ōneisthai ("to buy"). It makes sense, then, that "oligopsony" refers to a "buyers' market" in which the seller is subjected to the potential demands of a limited pool of buyers. Another related word is "monopsony," used for a more extreme oligopsony in which there is only a single buyer.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Here is my example with today's WFTD.
Obama wants to move the health care markets into an extreme oligopsony of government bureaucracies purchasing health care for everybody, with Kathleen Sebelius holding the checkbook.
Sebelius: Obamas HHS pick is part of his conspiracy of the culture of death
No pushing at the door please!
Happy Humpday Everybody!
Only
days left until BO's replacement is sworn in.
flirting with lateness my sweetums!
Good morning!

Olley, Oligopsony!
Wow, great word. Good morning!
It sounds like a medical procedure!
Soros, the Greek oligopsony. UNNNGH!
Yeah, we had a management association breakfast meeting this morning. I knew I was going to be late this morning getting WFTD posted. Actually got to it sooner than I feared I would. Then M-W threw me the curve of “oligopsony” today. Do you realize how difficult it was to try to stretch some connection between oligopsony and current news items?
Didn’t they suspect Soros of oligopsony a few years ago, with that bank of England trouble? And didn’t we suspect him of the same in our October surprise?
GMTA! That’s what I get for reading the word and not checking the thread.
Congressional kickback oligopsonators know that all
secret control of America is ONLY through contributions and other
untaxed, unreported, illegal, payments to them.

Fannie and Fred’s oligopsony
Created a lending cacophony
Got poor credit? Who cares?
Deadbeats getting their shares
All the losers, both ivory and ebony
;)
you can’t pull a word out of your butt instead of just re-serving leftover M-W words?? ; )
Today is trade deadline day for the NHL so fans are clicking like mad to see who’s in and who’s out. It’s like an oligopsony, in that few teams are selling and the buyers are playing it close to the vest.
Jax had her staples pulled out this morning and the Doc told her to stop using her head as a baseball bat!!!
School was delayed 2 hours this morning because of icy conditions still on some roads. Jax was thrilled about that because they were back from the Dr. before the bus arrived, so she wasn’t late for school.
Oh good, I hope she is feeling better.
Please add me to your classroom roll.
I use the current M-W word each Wednesday, mainly because I like the history of the word that M-W features in its WOTD. I suppose I could click the archive and pull out a word for a different day if I don't like the word M-W chooses on any given wednesday. For example, I could have used incarnadine or immoderate today.
