Apple today announced updates to its iMac and Mac mini desktop lines, including a 24-inch iMac that is priced more affordably than ever before and a Mac mini with powerful new integrated graphics. For the same US$1,499 price as the previous generation 20-inch iMac, the new 24-inch iMac delivers a 30 percent larger display, twice the memory and twice the storage. Delivering up to five times better graphics performance, the updated Mac mini now features the same groundbreaking NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics introduced with the aluminum unibody MacBook family.* The Mac mini is the world's most energy efficient desktop, drawing less than 13 watts of power when idle.** All iMac and Mac mini systems come with Mac OS X Leopard, the world's most advanced operating system, and iLife '09, Apple's unparalleled suite of consumer applications for managing and organizing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music.
"Our flagship 24-inch iMac with twice the memory and twice the storage is now available for just $1,499," said Tim Cook, Apple's COO, in the press release. "The Mac mini is not only our most affordable Mac, it's also the world's most energy efficient desktop computer."
The elegant, full-featured iMac line starts with the 20-inch iMac for $1,199 with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 memory, a 320GB Serial ATA hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics. The 24-inch iMac features a beautiful 1920-by-1200 pixel widescreen display that offers 30 percent more screen real estate than the 20-inch model, and starts at $1,499. I loves me some Mac Pr0n (even if the pics is of the x variety), but with a 1.8Mhz G5 that refuses to go belly up, I can't justify a new purchase.
Yet.
Well, I should hope so since you can build a screaming PC with a 24" monitor for under a grand.
How much would you spend to put useful software on it?
My only disappointment, other than my iMac looking old by comparison, is that quad-core is not yet an option.
That depends. What's useful to me may not be useful to you. :-)
The remote is no longer included with the Mini.
A Mini with HDMI and a Blu ray drive would be a great home theatre PC.
Ya, well, there is that!
I was just trying to point out that in many cases these days, hardware is only half 9if even that) of the equation.
Nvidia Plans Another Re-Branding of Graphics Cards.
Nvidias GeForce 9 to Become Nvidia GeForce GT, GTS
[10/06/2008 09:26 PM]
by Anton Shilov
Nvidia Corp. plans to re-name its graphics cards once again in a bid to spur interest towards its products and try to simplify its product lineup. However, graphics cards that are hardly different from those available a year ago, but which carry new names, will cause a mess on the market.
According to Nvidias recently released ForceWare 178.15 drivers, the company plans to quietly unveil GeForce GTS 150, GeForce GT 130 and GeForce GT 120 graphics cards shortly. Unfortunately, the new products will be hardly different from already available graphics cards, however, they will attract attention of end-users and system integrators, something that Nvidia needs these days.
The GeForce GTS 150 will be based on code-named G92 chip that powers massive amount of graphics cards, including GeForce 8800 GT, 8800 GTS, 8800 GS, 9600 GSO, 9800 GT, 9800 GTS, 9800 GX2. Actual configuration of the graphics card is unknown, but it would be logical to expect its characteristics to resemble those of 9800 GTX.
Nvidias GeForce GT 130 will be powered by the G94 that is also available on GeForce 9600 GT, 9600 GS, 9550 GT, 9800 S, 9700 S and so on. The GeForce GT 120, which features code-named G96 chip onboard, will be the successor of such graphics cards as GeForce 8600 GT, GeForce 8600 GTS, 9400 GT, 9500 GT as well s 9500 GS.
The new graphics cards will support DirectX 10 as well as hardware decoding of high-definition video streams along with advanced video post-processing, however, they will not bring any new features or considerable performance improvements. For example, the GeForce GT 120 will deliver the same functionality and performance as the GeForce 8600 GT, which was made available in April 07.
It is unknown whether Nvidia plans to reconsider pricing of new graphics cards compared to existing ones.
With the new renaming, this will be the third re-branding of Nvidia GeForce graphics cards without substantial improvements of feature-set or performance.
Nvidia did not comment on the news-story.
I'll take the basic 24-incher.
CPU: $350
2 x 2 GB DDR3: $100
Quality monitor: $350
That's $800 and you still have a bunch of other stuff to buy with your left over $200: case, mobo, PSU, hard drive, cooling, keyboard, mouse, graphics, DVD writer, camera, speakers, Firewire 400/800. And you still need to buy software unless you're going with Linux. I'd like the system to be equivalently quiet, so shop for quiet parts (especially for case/cooling/PSU), which are more expensive.
Eh, not too bad for retail. Tried to keep the specs close to that $1500 iMac though it pained me to keep the same shared video:
C2D E8200@2.66GHz (6MB L2 1066MHz) - $186
Mushkin 4GB DDR3 (2x2GB) - $75
Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H w/GeForce 9400 - $130
Built-in Audio, Firewire, USB, 1Gb NIC
Hitachi 1TB HD - $88
Sony DVD Burner - - $24
Logitech LS21 2.1Speakers w/sub - $28
MS Lifecam webcam VX-5500 - $49
Trendnet TEW-643PI 802.11n - $35
PC Power&Cooling Silencer - $60
CoolerMaster RC-534 Case - $50
Acer P243W 24” - $260
That’s around $980. Throw in a cheap keyboard and mouse and you’re there. Yeah, put your Linux stuff on there too, though anything laying around the house will do.
Bigger hard drive, cooling sufficient for a 2.66GHz processor running at stock speeds and a quiet power supply. Life is good.
Throw in a cheap keyboard and mouse and youre there
This is the attitude I'm talking about. No care for quality equipment or build, yet claim an equivalent computer. Sure, I won't care about much more than the CPU and enough cooling if I'm building a render farm, but we're talking about a personal computer here.
For the same US$1,499 price as the previous generation 20-inch iMac, the new 24-inch iMac... the updated Mac mini now features the same groundbreaking NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics introduced with the aluminum unibody MacBook family... drawing less than 13 watts of power when idle. All iMac and Mac mini systems come with Mac OS X Leopard... Every iMac features... a total of six USB 2.0 ports (including two on the Apple Keyboard); and one FireWire 800 port... the Mac mini... five USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 800 and a SuperDrive... Mini DisplayPort... DVI connections... Every Mac comes with Apple's innovative iLife '09 suite of applications for managing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music... Leopard, the world's most advanced operating system which features Time Machine...Nice enhancements. Looks like there's some kind of custom processor option on the high end?
Pretty cheap? LOL! I see namebrands there, Bubba.
I’m not selling it. I just said I could build a screamer for under a $1,000. And while I’d hardly call what Apple is peddling for an additional $500 a “top-o-the-line” screamer, I could certainly tweek the components I listed here to run circles around the Mac. Though that inbred video will certainly slow down any potential overclock.
Dealer cost I could probably shave another $75 or $100 bucks off of it.
How’s this - knock $260 off this price and go buy your own monitor. You can decide to get kid proof, dog proof or fire proof. You can choose bigger, smaller, wider or portrait. CRT or LCD. So then you’ll get the core stuff for only $700.00. You get to choose!
Most of the prices are from NewEgg.
I just fired-up my original MacMini yesterday for the first time in, well, awhile. I didn’t even remember it had the PowerPC chip in it. I had bumped up the HD to 80GB and the RAM to 1GB shortly after buying it. No wireless, extra for KEYBOARD AND MOUSE. It seem so.... inadequate now. I have to figure out what to do with it.
Hitachi HDS721010KLA330 1 TB 7200 rpm More Info $ 410.00
You found this drive for only $88??? Where???
$50 is at the bottom end of what Cooler Master offers. The iMac has a high-end custom-designed case, don't throw a cheapie up against it. Cooler Master's all-aluminum cases (as the iMac is) start at $199.
Though that inbred video will certainly slow down any potential overclock.
The 24" uses only discreet graphics.
The point is, yes, you can build a basic cheap box with a fast processor that will be faster than the iMac. That's good if all you care about is raw speed, thus my render farm comment. Otherwise, it costs $$$ to try to get the same thing. Dell's attempt at an iMac is even more expensive.
And don't even start trying to build a Mac Pro out of Newegg. The processors aren't even at Newegg yet, but you'll probably be paying over $1,000 a piece when they get there, and mobos run in the $400+ range. In the past we usually haven't been able to build a Mac Pro equivalent from Newegg for less than the price of a Mac Pro.
That one is the Hitachi 1TB w/16MB cache at Newegg for $88. The one you’re asking about has a 32MB cache. I saw it somewhere for $110 or so.
