List at link. I couldn't get it to C&P properly.
What about Miss Marple (Agatha Christie)?
Nice to meet you. I read the majority of the Bond books as a teenager, and the rest later on. (IIRC, the paperbacks cost less than a buck). Fleming's Bond was completely different than Sean Connery (the ultimate movie Bond).
I would disagree. Bond novels were huge in the early 60’s , which spawned the first one, DR. NO.
Bond was a product of the 50’s soviet scare and the cold war.I actually have the entire James Bond collection , 1st 2nd and 3rd prints and the entire series from the early 60’s in paperback.
LOL! When I was in Army Basic Training my smart-@ss little sister used to cut the Lulu cartoons from the Sunday paper and mail them to me. We thought it was the STUPIDEST comic strip ever, but since it became a personal joke between us, Lulu it is!
Re: James Bond - I read the books before the movies came out.
An awful lot of people here like Orson Scott Card. Is there some reason Ender Wiggen isn’t on the list from Enders Game?
ML/NJ
Trixie Belden, too! :) There was also some series about a military Nurse; can’t remember her name, though...
Thanks for fixing that up for us! :)
I wouldn’t fit in either.
Luke Skywalker tops my list- so many reasons! No Vader, astounding!
But if they’re dismissing ‘fiction’ that became films, I’ll go with Willard Phule of the Phule’s Company books, and Slartibartfast from Hitchhikers Guide. Just for how the name sounds alone! lol. The depressed robot was a riot too.
You got me curious now so i went on Wikpedia:
Initially Fleming’s Bond novels were not bestsellers in America, but when President John F. Kennedy included From Russia With Love on a list of his favourite books, sales quickly jumped.[14] Fleming wrote 14 Bond books in all: Casino Royale (1953), Live and Let Die (1954), Moonraker (1955), Diamonds Are Forever (1956), From Russia with Love (1957), Dr. No (1958), Goldfinger (1959), For Your Eyes Only (1960), Thunderball (1961), The Spy Who Loved Me (1962), On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1963), You Only Live Twice (1964), The Man with the Golden Gun (1965), and Octopussy and The Living Daylights (1966).
In the late 1950s, the financial success of Fleming’s James Bond series allowed him to retire to Goldeneye, his estate in Saint Mary Parish, Jamaica
“Has anyone actually read The Great Gatsby out of their own free will?”
LOL! Nope.
“Calvin and Hobbes — Bill Watterson”
Nothing makes me laugh harder. :)
"Ender's anger was cold, and he could use it. Bonzo's was hot, so it used him."
0bama is already included - see #59 Big Brother - 1984 (George Orwell) and considering all the vitriol, George Bush has become Emmanuel Goldstein.
Where the hell is John Galt? Or any Ayn Rand? LOL!
(Yes. Definitely an NPR list!)
Obama’s staff tried to alter the list to include “The Communist Manifesto” and “Rules for Radicals”.
Verily, it is a cornucopia of the anti-hero and social deconstructionist.
Travis McGee rocks! LOVE those novels. I think I’ve read all of them twice. Time to read them again. Now THAT is a man! I’ve also found some awesome pieces of music through those books. John D. MacDonald was an awesome writer.
I read The Girl, the Gold Watch, and Everything. It was OK.
