You all were so helpful with a question on seeds the other day that I have another one for you. Preparing for the most basic needs of a SHTF scenario, I have a wonderful shotgun and .22. As far as adding a high power rifle goes, I know what I'd LIKE to have but that's another story. Is there a consensus on a quality-made, affordable rifle, and what should I expect to pay? Would it be a bad idea to buy from a pawn shop?
For those of you who seem to like to "notice" these things, yes, it's my second post ever on FR. Doesn't make me evil. Thanks.
Also a great weapon. Most of these have been modified and rebarreled from .303 to .308 anyway. There is a company that even specializes in sporterizing them and I was thinking of their "Jungle Carbine Model 7" when I suggested that model. For the life of me, I can't recall the name of the company that does those conversions. Anybody remember and have a link?
I think the 2Bs were built from scratch as .308.
There was an outfit, called the “Santa Fe Armory” in Anaheim, CA, if I recall correctly, that built replicas of the No. 5 Jungle Carbine by modifying No. 4s about 50 years ago.
There is also an outfit named “Gibbs” (in Pennsylvania?) that built replicas of the No. 5, probably from scratch. There was an article about them five or ten years ago in one of the trade magazines.
Yep, DCM is still around.
Here’s something good directly related to your grandfather’s battle there.

It was also pretty popular with Merrill's Maruaders in the Pacific, and if you know where to look, you can even find 40 round magazines. I'm quite fond of the little weapon, 'though mine's been upgraded a little from original specs....
“Wait until the DOW hits 1,500 and you will be able to buy an entire arsenal for almost nothing.”
Nonsense. There will be an inverse relationship between the value of stocks and the value of things which can protect your life in the coming months.
If tanks start rolling down your street, it won’t look so foolish.
You have a local gun shop that you patronize? Ask them how much they charge to receive a rifle for you. Most will do it for $25-$50. It’ll get shipped to them, and you fill out the paperwork there.
My local Walmart got a bunch of Ammo in last week. However, when I went back a few days later, most of it was gone.
That's the one! They built a really cool MK 7 in 308 and it had a nice nickel finish.
This would be one of the worst possible choices in the world in that capacity. Way too heavy to carry long distances or comfortably, a smaller back-up PERSON (wife) would not want to use it if i was incapacitated.
Very long engagement time. Self-defense shots are usually snap shots.
Very long 2d target engagement time. When three perps are coming after you, getting #2 in sights in less than the minimum 10 seconds it would take you to recover from this... (it would take me about 10 days) is very important.
So it shoots 1,000,000 yards. How do most urban, suburban dwellers justify shooting anyone not on their yard!
So it can penetrate homogeneous steel better than a proton torpedo. Today's bullets need to penetrate skin, or in the case of a totally armored human, a face or ankle.
So it blows them into microscopic biological specimens, the 30.06, M1 Carbine round and the .45 APC got us through WWII, and the 9mm x 19 was fine in German SMGs (although I do not like the round)
Very small total load-out ability, especially with a basic battle load of ammunition.
Why not bring a 280 MM AC?
7.62 X 54(r)ammo is also still pretty available all things considered.

Yep. Just like CSM Plumley said there would be.
“but it makes about as much sense as that rifle.”
Then why are you reading this thread?
Women don’t “need” bikinis either and they probably don’t make “sense”, but you know what? I am glad they have them.
Though I have several AR15 variants, an SKS and big bore bolt actions including the .375H&H my main pride is my Springfield Armory M1A Standard.
Its not cheap and sometimes are to find but its the easiest to maintain and operate. I have 150gr, Barnes Triple shocks loaded for hunting, 168gr. BT Gold Match for long range and the usual mix of off the shelf FMJ.
However I live in rural Alaska and its marginal with dangerous game, a bit overpowered for close in work but does work better all around compared to the .223/5.56.
Its much heavier than the AR or AK but its American built and using the .308 or .30cal bullets makes it more desirable as far as reloading, powerwise for those that don’t know much the .308 could be called a 30-06 short in a way like what the Garand shoots.
My favorite bolt action is the stainless Ruger, and close second is the Winchester model 70.
The popular cartridges like the .223 and .308 are starting to get scarce so if a person was to find a good deal on another caliber like the .243 or .270 and stock up on ammo that may be the only thing to do right now.
My local Sportsmen Warehouse is always out of standard reloading bullets but they usually have the high end stuff like the new Barnes Triple Shocks, so I am buying them.
to the contrary. If the dow hits 1500, guns and ammo will be worth a LOT more than they are worth now. Cash will be worth nothing.
Do you have any personal experience with them?
