Is this cartoon racist?

Riddle me this: the New York Post, a famously combative, conservative newspaper owned by Fox News proprietor Rupert Murdoch, runs a cartoon implying that a crazed chimpanzee wrote the recent economic stimulus bill, which was actually championed and developed by our nation's first black president.Longtime civil rights activist Al Sharpton thinks it might be. New York Gov. David Paterson, who is that state's first black chief executive, has said "an explanation is in order."

This cartoon is a MONUMENTALLY STUPID thing to publish. Even if it is not overtly racist (my question is, how in the world could an editor NOT foresee its implications or the inferences that would be drawn?!?), it betrays a complete lack of understanding of the Liberal desire to SHUT DOWN free speech by portraying it as “dangerous,” “hate-mongering,” etc. In other words, regardless of the intent of the cartoon, it has put a HUGE weapon in the hands of Liberals. That’s just plain DUMB within the current atmosphere in which we must operate.

A few comments, not particularly related to each other...

I made a comment to the Wife shortly after the election that we would endure four years of Black History Month.

I have no reason to believe Eric Holder is interested in a conversation, but a lecture. I recall during the Monica Presidency a "dialogue on race" conducted by some black historian. Those who dared to disagree with his viewpoint were roundly denounced as the racists and Uncle Toms they "were."

There's a special coming up on CNBC..."NEWBOs...The Rise of America's New Black Overclass."

I've found a mindset on the part of some members of this so-called "Overclass" that is racist and repugnant.

I am a cartoonist, editorial and humor....... Upon seeing the said cartoon, my first thought was.........a chimp(s) could have done a better job writing porkulus.

The cartoonist, Sean Delonas, did a great job of uniting a current news story (chimp) with a very important subject (porkulus).........

My reading of the cartoon may or may not be correct, but, I will take the time right now to say that Delonas stands among my very favorite editorial cartoonists.....

I can see many who have lost limbs getting a chuckle out of this cartoon, and putting a copy of it on the wall by their computer...........the day that we can begin to laugh at ourselves........is the day that the healing begins.

Many actors, who in their role might relay something similar to the thought of this cartoon (see reply 72)........well, they might get an award.

And, many writers, who might also relay something similar to this cartoon, well they might get an award, too...........

But a conservative cartoonist, or a cartoonist whose work leans conservative, will get continual grief for doing something that echos what a liberal actor or liberal writer might get accolades for.......

Good point! Michael Ramirez is also one of my favorite editorial cartoonists........IIRC he went to IBD from the LA Times in 2006 (the Times deemed him too conservative and dropped him from the staff).

Ramirez is highly accomplished and has earned many awards. He is an excellent draftsman, very creative in his thoughts and a prolific artist. A great example of success through hard work..........

In his own words......."An editorial cartoon is not just a funny picture," says Ramirez. "It is a powerful instrument of journalism, sometimes sharp and refined, its message cutting quickly to the point, and other times, blunt and overpowering, seizing the readers’ attention with its dark imagery."

Ramirez and Delonas both have a healthy humorous side, but, IMHO Delonas smiles more while he works........

It is a stupid bad cartoon. Yes, I think it is racist..at the least very offensive and ugly. a woman was mauled by a chimpanzee, a tragic story and there is a history of calling blacks monkeys.

I found it offensive. I don’t like Obama, I hate the stimulus bill. But to be fair, this is disgusting on many levels. And conservatives do not need to support this trash.
