Meet and get to know your local county agricultural specialist. They can be a wealth of information on types of plants for the climate, ease of growth, and long term storage.

Non-hybrid seeds so you can keep the seeds year after year. In addition to the regular seed pkts they sell special sealed pkgs guaranteed for 3 years.
I’ve heard of many people who freeze seeds for up to 7 or 9 years.
Check out FR survival thread for tons more info.

My suggestion is why wait to plant and grow until a meltdown. It is better to get experience with what ever you want to grow while there is plenty of resources around rather than figure out that while you have other problems to deal with.
Besides you may find out growing some things isn’t worth the effort. Also cheap homegrown food isn’t going to hurt your budget or health.

Any dry seeds will survive indefinitely in a deep freeze or refrigerator freezer compartment. I store my seeds that way and have used seeds from the same supply for years.

Go buy some whole coconuts. That way after the meltdown (globull warming), you can plant a tropical tree.

Try FEDCOSEEDS.com for seeds,
and seedsavers for information on how long they keep.
I’ve purchased from them for years, and have had good luck with them.
Generally the bigger the seed the longer it keeps.
Onion seeds are generally only good for a year.

Be sure to get the kind that reseed. You don’t want any sterile seeds (like seedless watermelon).

Buying seeds isn’t a bad idea but you’ll need a couple seasons of experience growing vegetables if you want them to feed you.

Go to Sams Club and you can get 50lb bags of rice.

I have Mahi-Mahi seeds, lasagna seeds, pepperoni seeds and taco seeds. I used to keep quarter pounder with cheese seeds but termites like them for some reason... so I quit stocking them.
