What seeds to buy?

Posted on 02/17/2009 10:09:08 AM PST by goose the rio

I was wondering which seeds to buy in order to keep on hand in the event of a national meltdown. What's the longest shelf life I can expect if I just store them and hopefully never have to use them?

You can buy any seeds you want because if things get that bad, you’re going to be up day and night with gun in hand to guard your bounty.

If we are all forced to grow our own food, do you really think the power will stay on?

That being said, keeping seeds in a cool, dry spot, I’ve had them stay viable (or atleast 50-60% of them) for 3-4 years.

Go buy some whole coconuts. That way after the meltdown (globull warming), you can plant a tropical tree.

Depends on a lot of factors . . . how far in the hinterlands one is, amongst others.

I ordered from heirloom seeds at the first of the year, they were so busy it took 6 weeks to get my order filled. The next time I checked it was going to take 8 weeks and that was ordering in January. I think lots of people are planting more this year.

Anyway, I would think that link has been posted there (survival thread) but won’t hurt to link it again. I hadn’t seen it. I just glanced at your link but it looked great!

At work, better get back at it!

Try FEDCOSEEDS.com for seeds,
and seedsavers for information on how long they keep.

I’ve purchased from them for years, and have had good luck with them.
Generally the bigger the seed the longer it keeps.
Onion seeds are generally only good for a year.

Be sure to get the kind that reseed. You don’t want any sterile seeds (like seedless watermelon).

Buying seeds isn’t a bad idea but you’ll need a couple seasons of experience growing vegetables if you want them to feed you.

Good point on the power...
I have an evil plan.
Take my generator and convert it to run on gassified wood.
Sounds strange, but it will work.

I have Mahi-Mahi seeds, lasagna seeds, pepperoni seeds and taco seeds.  I used to keep quarter pounder with cheese seeds but termites like them for some reason... so I quit stocking them.

These are two concurrent ongoing threads where you will find answers to your question as well as quite a few preparedness items too. (settle in and prepare for everything from gardening, seeds, cooking, storing and much much more)

As several on this thread have already advised, go with non-hybridized heirloom seeds which allow you to save your own seeds from year to year and produce the same quality of vegetables each year.

Not knowing what climate growing zone you are in (north or south) be sure to select seeds that grow well in your zone. If you live in a short growing season cool climate, don't grow vegetables that require a long growing season.

There's too much info to provide you in this thread. A couple of my favorite heirloom seed suppliers that I patronize are listed as follows:

Baker's Creek

Seed Savers Exchange

Good luck, and don't delay. If you need more info, just FReepmail me.
