What seeds to buy?
Posted on 02/17/2009 10:09:08 AM PST by goose the rio
I was wondering which seeds to buy in order to keep on hand in the event of a national meltdown. What's the longest shelf life I can expect if I just store them and hopefully never have to use them?

heirloom seeds . . . such as from
tomatofest.com
insure dry . . . cool . . . if dry . . . and dry weather, low humidity, store in glass Mason/Ball type canning jars, imho.
Check StanDeyo.com for lots of survival info.

Meet and get to know your local county agricultural specialist. They can be a wealth of information on types of plants for the climate, ease of growth, and long term storage.

Non-hybrid seeds so you can keep the seeds year after year. In addition to the regular seed pkts they sell special sealed pkgs guaranteed for 3 years.
I’ve heard of many people who freeze seeds for up to 7 or 9 years.
Check out FR survival thread for tons more info.

My suggestion is why wait to plant and grow until a meltdown. It is better to get experience with what ever you want to grow while there is plenty of resources around rather than figure out that while you have other problems to deal with.
Besides you may find out growing some things isn’t worth the effort. Also cheap homegrown food isn’t going to hurt your budget or health.

Any dry seeds will survive indefinitely in a deep freeze or refrigerator freezer compartment. I store my seeds that way and have used seeds from the same supply for years.
