OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Against advice, Luis Ortega and Manuel Garcia gave their full names to a committee of lawmakers when they testified Wednesday in favor of a bill that would make illegal immigrant students eligible for state financial aid for college.
Ortega and Garcia are both illegal immigrants, brought to the United States when they were kids by their parents. They were advised not give their full names to protect themselves from deportation. But they were two of a half dozen students who came forward and spoke openly.
"We're not asking for a free pass, all I'm asking for is sharing with you the American dream," Ortega, an 18-year-old University of Washington student, told lawmakers in the House Higher Education Committee.
Under a bill being considered here, students like Ortega and Garcia would be eligible for the state's main financial aid program. The proposal would expand the state needs grant program, which provided around $182 million in financial aid for 72,000 students in fiscal year 2008... The illegal immigrant financial aid bill is House Bill 1706.

When it ain’t about the freebies, it’s always about the freebies.
Mr. Ortega, so are thousands of non-resident undergraduates from elsewhere in the United States, as well as thousands of foreign national students who have chosen to act in a lawful manner.
Of course, you think that you are sufficiently privileged to cut in line.
Another future Democrap voter.
Why bother having laws? Total anarchy. Not only are they allowed to stay, collect welfare, food stamps, untaxed wages, now we’ll pay to send them to college.
The world has gone upside down.
...and free medical care
Sharing is a two way street, not a one way free lunch. What does Ortega bring besides being the offspring of law breaking parents? Hey, I know, let’s offer the same deal to offspring of anyone found to be in violation of U.S. Federal Law.
Deport them! (Who am I kidding.) The sad part is they know this to. That’s why they’re so brazen.
“”We’re not asking for a free pass, all I’m asking for is sharing with you the American dream,””
I think many ‘immigrants’ believe Americans just get ‘handed’ this so called ‘American Dream’. As much as anything else, the ‘American dream’ is hard work, sacrifice and obeying the rules! It was for my family, still is.
GO HOME, alien.
Tuition for Illegals Ping!
“Ortega and Garcia are both illegal immigrants, brought to the United States when they were kids by their parents.”
Yet they KNEW that they were safe here, even when testifying before legislators. THIS is the heart of the problem. The OBL has been successful in distinguishing between “criminal” and supposed “non-criminal” illegals and so they were not arrested and deported on the spot. Instead, they were given an opportunity for their voices to be heard, laws ignored.
Dream Act pushing.
This is about open border illegals.
Remember the US congress wanted amnesty in order to prolong and enlarge the housing bubble. Imagine the crisis if we had 10 MILLION more toxic mortgages on the books due to amnesty.
For a while I thought we were in an economic meltdown. Now I see we have so much money we can afford to give it away to criminals.
I’m hoping the meltdown is especially hard on these scumbags and the rest of the welfare kings and queens of America too, worthless trash that they are.
