Are you concerned about the cancer risk?

I believe there is a well-documented increase in heart disease, stroke, and endometrial cancer from HRT, which is why the therapy has fallen dramatically in popularity. If your wife must do this, she should try to do it for as short a period of time as she can manage and use the lowest acceptable dosage.

Suzanne Somers has written several books about it. My wife would tell you that it works.
I found out through a friend that his wife used HR and he nothing but good things to say about it.
If your doctor does a blood test (hormone levels) then he probably is a credible doctor.

Let us know how it’s going. I’m looking into ‘bioidentical hormones’, myself (perimenopause). In fact.....I’m a WALKING hormonal disaster. :D

I took it for several years then quit, didn’t need it anymore. It really helped night sweats and mood swings.

It helped me a lot, but my doctor would only let me stay on it for five years. Before that, I would just pour sweat with no warning. Hormones fixed that problem for me and also gave me nice smooth, soft skin. I’d go ahead with it if I were your wife.

Any feedback on HRT....
I started taking it in 1986 - I was going nuts and wanted everyone out of my life - including myself. Stayed on it(different versions but the patch was the last one) for 18 years. I would lie on my bed reading a book, looking at a spot on the popcorn bedroom ceiling and cry because it wasn’t perfect. Tried to tell myself not to look at that spot but it didn’t work.
HRT works like a miracle - at least it did for me.
Took myself off HRT in 2004 and never looked back. Got tired of the “doom” reports and doctors with no definitive answers re: the risk. I was so miserable when I started taking it that I had nightmares of returning to those “old” days if I stopped but none of those old symptoms returned.
Annual mammogram are a must to get the prescription but at the age when HRT becomes an option, a good idea anyway. Hope this helps.

I think that the medical risks are greatly overblown and the medical benefits (it's good for your heart) are under-reported. Plus, there's no question that the hormones are a boon for a woman's appearance. When the time comes, I'll take them.

FWIW, I have never had a hot flash and never took HRT. I took 800 IU a day of Vit E along with other supplements.

Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that NOT being on HRT will keep her cancer free.
Keep in mind that HRT is simply replacing what the body has quit making. So do your research and feel comfortable with your decision.
No one can deny she will feel wonderful taking them...even if it's just a little :)

Hot flashes are also now being treated with Effexor XR (an anti-depressant/anti-anxiety that is also effective against hot flashes).

Had a girlfriend that had it, and while on it she was loving gracious and great to be around, we were thinking of getting married. She read some stories about risks involved with it, stopped taking it, stopped being loving, stopped being gracious and stopped being great to be around. She broke it off with me after being off therapy for about a month. I don't know if the risks are real and I would check it out with lots of research if I were you, but I do know the difference between the woman who loved me when she was on it to the woman that grew to hate me in one short month after stopping was like day and night.
This is all the info I have and I hope it helps.

I would be concerned about the cancer risk, but I can imagine the hormone levels making her crazy would almost outweigh the risks.

As long as you don't expect miracles because everyone is different I think it could help. But, make absolutely, positively sure she gets a mammogram EVERY YEAR!

Combi-Patch!!! Low dose.
As long as personal family history/risk of female cancers is low, this is the way to go. I’ve been using it for almost 10 years. Took the estrogen/progesten pills for awhile - delivery of the med through skin works best.
I do get a biopsy annually now - risk is low, but this makes sure nothing grows unnoticed. Takes care of the hot flashes - my life was miserable with those! Just my opinion!
