Don’t think most would understand the PERSHING comment.

The only reason I knew was because I had been a member of Perhsing Rifles in college ROTC.

Soccer. The only game where non-fans whine more about it than fans.

Whine?

I was just pointing out a simple observation.

The better statement would be: "The only game where players whine more than fans."

Your observation was “simple,” yes. Used as a noun, not an adjective.

Definitely need to be more creative. Something like the “drop the bomb” chants in games against Japan.

Others mileage may vary here, but in my experience the folks who complain the most about soccer never played ANY sport at a competitive level.

Those who have played something competitively (i.e. above little league) typically seem understand and respect athleticism across multiple sports; without the insecurity of projecting their own inability to play ball--no matter what type it is.

Simple is an adjective, there is no version of it that fits as a noun.

That would be "simpleton."

Can you disprove that simple observation with any country that plays soccer as its main national sport?

If you say so.

Can you name a sport that is not played by a conquered nation? To illustrate how non-sensical your "simple" observation is, would you say that NASCAR is a sport played primarily by States who practised slavery?

I do, Merriam-Webster backs me up.

Touche.
However, I never said my observation wasn't nonsensical. I said it was simple. Take it as you will. It doesn't hurt my feelings.

I'm glad that Team U.S.A. kicked Mexico's ass. Especially after the "Osama" incident years ago.

Mea culpa for ruining an otherwise good thread on the U.S.A.'s thumping of Mexico. At least we can beat them on the playing field.

Have a nice day!

Don't even start with me. "Simple" may be used as a noun. If anything, you could chastize me for not adding an apostrophe "s" but where will that get you?

Fact of the matter is, you made a non-sensical observation. Everyone understands the point you were trying to make, but it doesn't make it any less stupid upon examination.

Lol, such a generalization. If that's the case, what is our national self-esteem tied up with, exactly? Obama-love?

Haha, I'll take soccer over that, anyday.

Its a generalization, like saying the weather in California is nice.

There's no need for those who appreciate the game to take offense.

You've never seen "simple" used as a noun? Is English your first language?

It's not a matter of me "lightening up," it's more of a matter of usage. I'll sit here all day and teach.

Yes, and I managed to do very well in the subject.

I guess Merriam and Webster don't know the meaning, either.

Please enlighten me. Other than the out of using it as a proper name, please enlighten me as to how "simple" is a noun. Even in the poem "Simple Simon" simple was used to describe Simon, in other words, an adjective.

You have got to be kidding. Without even looking, even Merriam Webster (that I do not use) must recognize “simple” as a noun. Why don’t you quit while you’re behind?

Obviously, you didn’t refer to the definition and link I provided you. Again, I await your example. Other than a proper name, use “simple” as a noun.

Never mind. I take it back. Apparently, in the 14th century, simple was used in the sampe manner as simpleton. There, I concede. Apparently, long-ago, it was used to describe a plant that could be used for medicinal purposes.

Neither use is common today.
