for years.. Thanks for posting.. and noticing.
It’s the little things that bite ya the hardest in the end.
combat patchs on the BDU are backwards and is authentic
I’m confused.
I’m in uniform right now and as I look down on The Flag, the blue field is on the right (closest to my right arm). That’s where it’s supposed to be, right? (That’s what I’d learned).
I'd always wondered about that but was told that is protocol, as the blue union square is always to be closest to the heart.
I believe the flag is “backwards” on a uniform to show which way the flag is flying in the wind. If it were “correct” then it would appear the wearer of the uniform was retreating instead of moving forward. The US Military doesn’t retreat (only politicians do). So I think by your description the BDU is correct. I’m not positive on this, just what I have heard.
The coffin though, probably just an idiot prop guy that didn’t know what he was doing.
The idea of the backwards flag is to communicate the idea of what a real flag on a pole would look like while charging forward into the wind. Aircraft sport a similar flag on the starboard side of the airframe.
It does appear backward if worn on the right arm. It is not an error, nor disrespect.
This is correct and is meant to depict the flag waving if both the aircraft and servicemember were advancing with the flag, thus the edge away from the pole would be to the rear.
I couldn’t imagine Don Bellisario, Exec. Producer of NCIS, getting it wrong since he is a Marine and a Republican.
I’m glad to see I am not the only one that notices things like this.
That one is actually correct. A previous post explains it.
The NCIS thing would just be an oversight. Their production team harbors many fugitive Hollywood conservatives who would probably be upset to know they gaffed this. Contact them and let them know about it and I expect they’ll apologize to you.
Here is general Casey & Petraeus displaying correct right arm colors placement. The blue field faces forward on this arm.

I think sometimes it no more complicated than they are using decals and there’s only a single presentation. If they use a decal on the other side it will be backwards.
I’ve sewn hubby’s patches (LE, not military) on for 20+ years and just once, about 8 years ago, noticed one flag that was backward so saved it. I’ve never heard of the forward charging thing.
The backward flag on the BDUs in NCIS is correct. The US is at war so the flag appears on military uniforms as backward. This is symbolic of charging into battle. When the US is at peacetime, the backward flag is replaced with the correct flag.
As for the Vin Diesel movie, knowing Hollywood, it was a screw up that no one bothered to look into.
That’s the way they wear theem now. It was explained to me as if they were running into battle carrying the flag it would be flapping as depicted.
Define "these days."
The flags are worn on the BDUs. Think about it, if you are moving forward in battle with a flag, which way does the flag go...backwards.
