Yeah, but this is a good jobs program - it not only pays people for doing something useful, it trains them for a potential future job (CW II).

Absolutely right. If this "S" thing has to happen, God please let it be a "velvet divorce" similar to what the Czechs and Slovaks pulled off after the fall of communism. Once blood is spilled, all bets are off and it'd be an orgy of unintended consequences.
Better yet, I'd hope for a return to the United STATES of America rather than this modern notion of an Imperial, Omnipresent Federal Government bribing the states and its citizens with their own tax money. I think the only way to get there is to somehow make the FedGov and the left understand where this can end if they continue on this path.

I agree...ideally, we would go back to a limited federal government, and we all benefit. Then, if some states want to experiment and be laboratories for socialism, let them try (and learn the hard way, of course).

No, sorry, I don’t know of any serious movements yet.
At this point, anyone who’s well known and supports the “S” word would be immediately labeled as kook, since you can still get up in the morning, go to work, and eat out in crowded restaurants.
It will take some of the effects of the meltdown to really hit before people start asking whether we really have to tolerate it. It will be things like price controls (and therefore shortages), rationing, empty malls that used to be bustling, etc. Until we get hyperinflation, that won’t happen...but has to at some point, once people stop trusting us to pay back in full (i.e., not print money to pay back).
I’ll come back here and get you the info, once I hear about a serious effort, led by a respected leader.
