DINO by Nick Tosches is one of the best biographies I’ve ever read, and I never read bios of celebrities. Highly recommended.

I think you are right. Sinatra had better writers, composers, arrangers, and orchestras, but Dean had a better voice.

I don’t think there’s any maybe to it. I never understood Sinatra’s popularity.

Listen to his early, early recordings with Jimmy Dorsey. He really rocked then!

It actually was Tommy Dorsey (after Harry James), but you are right. Young Frankie was wonderful!

It’s amazing how he zeroed in on the Zero so many years ago.

Sinatra HAD a great voice, especially before his throat problems (at which point he started to sound gravelly). Young Frank Sinatra recordings are pretty amazing.

Frank could do stuff with phrasing and timing that no one else could. He was a real artist when he was serious about his work.

Dino had a great voice, but he was in many ways Bing Crosby with a slur. He was in fact, afraid of meeting Bing in person because he knew it. But his stuff is far easier to get into than Frank’s IMHO. It’s more pleasing to the ears.

But as far as a complete package? Dino was better than the rest of the Rat Pack by a mile. No one can make me laugh like Dino.

All of them were better than anything commercial music has to offer today sadly. And they could all act, sing and dance. And they were Republicans. LOL.

I grew up listening to Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin. My uncle (who lived with us) had a little record player and he would play Songs For Swinging Lovers, Come Fly with Me, he had all Franks records. I remember waking up Saturday mornings to “The Isle Of Capri”. I liked Nelson Riddle as his orchestra. Dean just had that deep rich voice and that smile.

Wow. How can somebody not smile after watching that? Think I’ll go out and stimulate the economy today, buy a couple of Martin’s CDs.

Thanks for posting. Put me in a great mood.
