Antivirus 2009 HELP!!!!
Feb. 1 | Hildy

Posted on 02/01/2009 9:56:47 AM PST by Hildy

Anyone have any experience with this nasty piece of spyware. I had not even heard about it, until this morning when I put it on my neighbor's computer. It would have been bad enough if I had done it to my own, it's horribe I did it to his...so...what's the best way of ridding myself of this evil interloper. And for once, I'm using that term about something other than Obama!

Thanks!

You can boot up the computer independent of anything on its hard drive with a live Linux CD. It lets you access the hard drive without having to use anything that's on C:. Save all the data you want on some memory sticks and then reinstall Windows. A different trick I used to clean up a Windows computer was to go in safe mode then erase every single file that was created on the day of the infection.

I just added the Malware keyword to this....but not everyone adds keywords with any consistency....

But the keyword Malware will bring up a lot of threads....

Really? We installed Norton Anti-Virus and it took most of it out...but once in a while the pop up on the top bar of windows comes up. I figure we’ll invest in one of those cleaning programs. Someone mentioned one here.

Is that the new Norton 2009 version...?

.Fry's is running a Rebate special this weekend...at least on the online part of Fry's....$70 combo with rebate for most of the cost.

It doesn’t really matter, because I believe Norton’s live update automatically gives you the latest software. When we installed it, it took about 15 minutes to install the new downloads...

"Most of it" isn't good enough.

You can download, install and update, malwarebytes (free) at http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-18510_4-10804572.html

Then download, install, and update superantispyware (free) at http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?tag=mncol

Then go to kaspersky to run a free online antivirus scan, then run the malwarebytes, and then run the superantispyware, doing deep scans on all of them

“Then go to kaspersky to run a free online antivirus scan”

Ummm....Downloading the program and installing 45mb of files isn’t quite ‘online’...

IMO

I guess that you can delete the files when finished but along with my avast which is permanently installed and running, I also like to do online scans with other free AV scanners.

About once a month or so I will use ESET, kaspersky, and maybe a third company like norton or mcafee or bitdefender to verify my avast scans.

I’m doing a kaspersky scan as I am typing this.

I also run windows defender and spywareblaster full time while doing weekly scans with malwarebyte, superantispyware, adaware and with the windows defender.

I use zonealarm pro (it was a free giveaway)as my firewall.

I never seem to have security issues, in fact, I get my computers free from people that do.

"Any thoughts?"

R-click the avast! "a" icon on the Taskbar, next to the clock. Select "program settings"; select "update (basic)" and set virus and program updates to the "Ask..." option; then select the "Update (connections)" field and make sure neither box is checked.

Should help.

"Yes AVG it is good, although you have to click in to the schedule otherwise it is set to to do a full scan everday."

..............and a daily scan is no big deal. You can still work while it's being scanned. I've used AVG for 7 years. Nothing better.

Spyware Terminator Version 2.5.1.028 632KB With Web Security Guard is better, and it's free.

I agree with Jeff. It’s unlikely to be on your D drive and that’s the fastest way to restore your system. I’ve been able to get rid of this once the easy way by the instructions. Other times no matter what I did it kept popping back up so it was easier just to wipe out the hard drive and re-install.

Thanks. It seems to be working. I would like to ask you another question about wireless networks in the home but do not want to take up too much of your time. Let me know if you have the time. If not, thanks for your previous help.

Thanks for that link! I’ve gotten to the point that I’m about ready to give up on politics for a while. It raises my blood pressure too much. That link would make it easier to find the tech stuff, that isn’t quite so aggravating.
