Math Wizards Unite, Recarpeting the National Mall!
30 January 2009 | Incredulous Joe

Any Mathmaniacs out there looking for a good time on a Friday night?

I suspect that you might have to have better than average skill to do this, but math is math. It's free from opinion and sometimes the truths that are revealed are more powerful than punditry.

I floated this question a couple of days ago, but it was during a slow traffic hour and to a separate thread. It was also before this particular item was yanked from the Stimulus Shakedown.

Anyway, I was curious if anyone might have the math skill to breakdown the cost of resodding the National Mall? I will provide the necessary input in successive posts and am looking for a ballpark figure for costs of this item. Break it out however you like; dollar per square foot, by the acre, whatever works for you.

Also, if you know anything about landscaping ~ I don't ~ if you have any comment about such a project. It seems like we all must be rolling in cash that congress can even consider such nonsense.

I know that the Mall is very large, but $200 million to resod?? China can probably put a man on the moon for half that.

I wonder if they could get him back down though??

I venture to guess that I could personally get the bid on this item down to an absolute fraction of this cost with a couple pick-up trucks and a few dozen illegals.

Ain't that how we do it anymore?

The cost:

“Funding for a $200 million renovation of the Mall was included in Obama’s stimulus package but was yanked Tuesday night during a House Rules Committee session to slim down the $825 billion measure, according to congressional records.”

The Dimensions:

From the Capitol steps to the Lincoln Memorial, the Mall runs 1.9 miles (3.0 km).

From the steps to the Washington Monument, the Mall spans 1.2 miles (1.8 km).

From Grant Statue to Lincoln Memorial, the Mall covers 309.2 acres (1,251,000 m²).

The Sod:

hydroseeding for a turf lawn (not erosion control) $0.10/sq ft

sod should run $3.75-$4.00/yard installed (fescue and $1.75/yard cost)

Assume the Mall is approximately 500 yds wide.

(1.7M sq. yrds) X $4.00/sq yd = $6.8M worst case

Well,...I did at first, but 2 goons just kicked in my back door and broke my left kneecap.

Small oversight.

Not a pro but having walked the mall on a few occasions whether it costs $1 or $200 million it's money down the drain because they have no sprinkler system. The grass would be dead by the first of August. I do know sprinkler systems and without one it's a waste of money.

I sure it only cost $200 million because it would be done by Obama volunteers for free.

...to slim down the $825 billion measure...

Over a trillion dollars with interest. A trillion one dollar bills end to end would reach from here to the Sun.

If the 309.2 acres and $4/sq yard figures are accurate, then it will cost $5,986,112.00

Thanks.

Actually, I think this was the rough number I was going for; $200 mil divided by your 309 acres, which gives me $65,000 per acre.

That’s $65,000 for each acre!

Unreal!

This is the figure which would have been the one presented to one of the Dems in congress who are up for re-election in 2010 ~ and probably the only reason this item was even taken out.

We are represented by thieves!

Making 28,000,000 dollars a year, it would take Alex Rodrigez 7.14 seasons to pay off this lawn job.

It would take A-rod 7+ years to pay off the resodding of the National Mall.

It would take me slightly more than 3,000 years to pay for this landscaping.

“But it’s imported Mirukani grass $100 a square ft.”

Then we ought to charge a c-note for every lib “turf killer” that wants to come to the next inaugural and stand in that space.

Of course, I feel quite certain that Rahm may be working on that detail, as we speak.
