(CBS) CBS News has learned that the family of the octuplets born this week outside Los Angeles filed for bankruptcy and abandoned a home a little over a year-and-a-half ago.
Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman says the mother is in her mid-thirties and lives with her parents.
There's been no mention of the octuplets' father, Kauffman observes.
The grandfather, she adds, is apparently going to head back to his native Iraq to earn money for the growing family. He told CBS News he's a former Iraqi military man.

Why is this in f-chat?
How did she afford the fertility treatment???
It is possible she was treated in Mexico. Only about 2 hours away from her home.
“Who need to be stomped on?” Are you kidding, or what? Here is a welfare mom having a damned LITTER on the taxpayer dime! Is she a citizen...of the United States, that is? Our leftist MSM isn’t “stomping” on this ridiculous baby factory, it is lauding her performance! And of course, leaving out the fact that it is costing we who actually pay the tab one hell of a lot of money. The details left out of the story ARE the story. And our friends in the leftist media are laughing like hell at taxpayers.
You’re right, we should destroy them.
I love the respect you supposed pro-life conservatives pay to babies who didn't ask to be born.
Amen to that! These are precious lives. No one knows the whole story. I have been appalled at some of the comments.
That would be somebody we dragged over here as a result of the Iraq war. Why, oh why, can't we just leave the damned foreigners over there after we get done with our wars?
This is probably the biggest reason to avoid war in the first place, instead of wiping out the enemy, we invite thousands of them to come here, and bring their turd world s***hole ways with them.
Only if exposing societally destructive behavior and defunding it constitutes “destroying” them
puh leeze
I reiterate these are not “ordinary folk”
Being subject to public scrutiny of their selfish behavior goes along with the profession of being a taxpayer burden
Certain folks who seem to think they're so smart don't seem to understand that the message of this story--the reason the press are so gung ho about it--is because IT MAKES NANCY PELOSI'S POINT ABOUT 'FAMILY PLANNING'.
Caps not directed at you, of course, but at the morons who are soooooo smart, and who are joining in the crowd that sees the unborn in nothing but economic terms.
Sorry, she’s an overbreeder. Period.
the babies are innocent life but their parent(s) and fertilty doctors are incomprehensibly selfish
all disrespect intended
It’s an interesting story because it’s only the second time that we know of *ever*, I think I read, unless the MSM is lying, that octoplets have been all born alive.
It’s an amazing medical achievement.
Some insurance pays for IVF. Massachusetts requires it, I believe.
And babies are the result of 'selfish behavior'.
Thanks, Ms. Pelosi!
Anyone who actually believes this story is going to convince people on welfare to not have babies is on crack.

Some insurance does cover some portions of ivf if some people are insured. :)
Of course, which is why it was an amazing story. But now it's moved onto the family itself, and molding this story into some kind of metaphor for our national situation. Coincidentally, right after Pelosi was getting flak from the right for commenting about how family planning is about repairing our economy.
Osama the bomb belt maker? Did they mention which side they worked for?
These babies resulted from selfish behavior
A woman with no husband and 6 children being supported by welfare voluntarily had her ovaries hyperstimulated with medication
Had she died from this risky treatment, we would know the name of the doctor who did this, and why- because there would have been a lawsuit on behalf of her other children
I doubt if welfare recipents on crack read free republic but if the publicity generated by this standard of irresponsible personal behavior persuades fertility doctors to set standards for stimulating the ovaries of single indigent patients who alreadd have 6 small children- or causes the state of California to do so- then it’s a good thing
